Criminal Sittings. Wanganui, October 15. J His Honor the Chief Justine oponcf tlio criminal sittings of the Supremo Court to-day. The criminal calendar is rather heavy, and true bills wore found in the following cases:—Pat. Dillon, carnally knowing, two charges; W, Baird Drummond, larceny, two charges; Hertaua Matenga, a Maori, iorgery; W. Swayne Fleetwood breaking and entering; W. McDer*mott, rape; W. Whelan, false pro. tcnces; Daniel Phillips, larceny; Charles W. Langstone. forging and uttering; Thomas Naughton, alias McNauglitsn, abduction, fiobert Siookivell Hassell, arraigned on two charges of forgery, pleaded guilty. On the application of the counsel the prisoner was admitted on probation undor the First Offenders Probation Act, a settler entering into a bond of £SO for him for six months, W. Baird Drummond pleaded guilty to two charges of larceny, and was sentenced to eight months' hard labor, both to run contemporaneously. Daniel Phillip pleaded net guilty to a charge of stealing a. horse, saddle, and bridle, and the case occupied the Court till rising. In the case 0. H, Ashworth, for converting moneys of Stephen CairjA*' to his own use, he acting as the prosecution fell through, ow'ihy to no indictment being ecut in, It appears that Mr Jellicoe refused at the, last moment to attend the Court'fltk Wanganui, so the prosecutor had n7 time to get other counsel. The prosecutor applied to the Bench for an adjournment of the case till the next sitting of the Supreme Court, but his Honour said he could not do this, as it was the fault of the. prosecutor's counsel. Later on his Honor told Carrick that ho had sent in no indictment. He was legally liable to a penalty of 1100, but under, the. circumstances of his counsel being to blame; no doubt the Court would not press the penalty. The fact of Mr Jellicoe not appearing or presenting the indictment caused much surprise
