Masterton Borough Council.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of tho Borough Council was held last night, Present, the Mayor, and Crs Perry, Dixon, Fitton, Gapper, Hessey, and Ch^tyihortyjn, The minutes ot* the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Mr A. White applied to have a fow loads of gravel put on the road in front of his residence, Church-street, Referred to the Works Committee.
In response lo an application from Mr Dorset, secretary of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society that the Council should declare a |a]f holiday 011 tfie day of t|ie' Clavier-ton Show, October 80th, Or Fitton stated that last year a
sirailur request was .complied with, but when the Masterton Society applied to the Carterton Borough Council lor a like concession the request was refused, - The Mayor pointed out the applicants and the Carterton Borough Council were two different bodies. He thought it would show a bud feeling to follow in the steps of the Carterton Council,
It was resolved to proclaim a half holiday in accordancowith the request. The clerk of tho Wairarnpa North County Council wrote stating that orders had been given to put up notice boards cautioning people against depositing rubbish in the Waipoua river and defiling the stream, A WATER SUPPLY. Mr Williams forwarded plan and levels of a proposal to bring water from tho Kuamahunga river to a reservoir to be erected on Landsdowne estate, and stating he was prepared to givo tho Council the use of eleren acres ofland for tie purposes ofther jservoir. By this means it was estimated to supply the town with a high pressure water supply at a cost of £SOOO, which could be borrowed from the Government under the Loans to Local Bodies Act.
The Mayor said a poll would have to be taken over the whole borough to raise such a loan, and he did not think they would carry it, He thought the only way to do it would be to divide the borough into wards, and include in one ward all tho area that would benefit by a water supply, and then they could be rated separately, Or Gapper was of opinion that the proposed scheme would not answer, The water would Iwve to be brought through the Waipipi, and there it would be contaminated with tbo swamp water and rendered unfit for domestic purposes. Tha only way to get pure water would be by bringing it direct from the river through pipes to the town, It was a question that should be considered by ut committee, The Mayor said no man could tell what the absorption would be on the Landsdowne property, For domestio purposes tho Rimnuhanga was not a nice water, There was no water equal to that to be found under the feet ot people in tho town, What ho had thought wasthat Mr William Beotham would make a very good mayor. Why not get up a requisition asking him to stand as mayor, then let him cany out his scheme during his term of office.
Or Hessey thought the scheme would be altogether too expensive for the supply. It would never be a proper high pressure system. Or Perry said if it was going to be a costly undertaking it would be bettor to get the water from the Waingawa, It would be less expensive.
Tho Mayor thought the Waingawa would bo less expensive provided a satisfactory point could be found on the river to introduce it. Cr Chamberlain moved and Cr Dixon seconded that the question be referred to a Committee consisting of the Mayor, and Ore Capper, Fitton and Perry, to report at a future meeting. Carried. CHABITABLE AID. The Mayor reported that he had, together with tho Town Clerk, met the Chairman of the United District Board, and he thought satisfactory arrangements had been made in respect to paying what was due by the Borough Council. COAL TAH. Cr Fitton reported that there was a sufficiency of tar at tho gasworks to supply the Council for asphalting purposes. This concluded the business.
