ANGRY ANGLERS.
(To the Editor,)
Sik, —On my return from Napier, yesterday, I was very sorry to find that the trout have boon a source of discord and disagreement, that some of tho anglers havo howled at the Acclimatisation Society because it has asked them to refrain from fishing in a few hundred yards of the Makora stream for tho sole purpose
that we may bo able'to collect more ova and sooner stock tho main rivers of the district. I would ask them to compare tho few hundred yards of the Makora with the lluamahunga, Wai-
ngawai, Waiohino, Tauern and other nvors, and say whether it is not in the interests of anglers generally that we make the request. They
ittle know the difficulties we have lad, and still )we in running the
Masterton Hatchsry, or I am sure they would cordially help us in every way. I would ask them to exercise a little forbearauce and self-denial for a year or two and there will be no lack of fine well stocked rivers for them to fish in, lam sorry to hear
that some of the landowners on tlio Waipoua haveforbidden anglers to fish in their grounds, I question their right to do so. I would recommend
them, before prosecuting anyone, to look at their Crown grants and seo if the river is included in them, I think anyone who would dony anglers
lermission to fish in the streams
upon which their properties abut lacks in a marked degree jsympathy with the pleasure of his fellow creatures. I take it for granted that any man or boy worthy of the name of an angler would be very careful to do no damage to fences or crops, or in any way make himself a nuisance, I hear some talk of another acclimatisation society. I would recommend the promoters to pause' for a while. If societies wero formed, say at Masterton, Olareville, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough, Gladstone, Mauriceyille, Eketahmia, Hutt, Porirua, etc, etc, it might bring about a very pleasant and agreeable state of things: on the other hand : it might, lead to difficulties.—Yours, etc, William H. Beetium. Masterton, October 14,1889,
