For the Caulffeld Guineas £3OOO was taken about Merriment at G to 1, and Prince Consort was backed fer a couple of thousand at 5 to 1. For the V.R.C. Derby, Dunkeld wa^'backed jo .win £350 at 0 to 1. Benzoins being heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup at iO'O'tb/'ff. Carbine was backed to win £3OOO at 10 to 1, after which he shortened,and at the finish 8 to 1 was thobest price obtainable.
