EKETAHUNA.
(From our own correspondent.) As the Magistrate's Court is to be held hereon the 18th instant, ono would really think that the Boad Board would take advantage of it to have the case Eketahuna Road Board versus Bryant's sureties tried here. I am informed that the case was sot down for hearing here, but what do Iwe find now 1 Why, at the Board's meeting on Saturday last it was decided to have the case heard at Masterton. Seeing that the whole of the members of the Board signed the petition re Magistrate's Court here, it shows a sliglil inconsistency- on their part. It cannot be that they will savo expense, for the chairman and clerk will have to go to Masterton ; and in the event of losing the case, there is the extra expense of defendants travelling from Woodvillo, Very heavy rains today (Tuesday), and rivers in flood. Wairarapa North Countv CouncilThe ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday, Present-Crs Von Eedin, (in the chair), Meredith, Chamberlain, Dagg, Maunsell, and Elder. He was compelled ' to either stop the traffic or use the ' narrow tires until he bad repaired ' the damaged wheels, This he did for 1 four or five days. ' It was resolved that considering it was through an accident the breach 1 of tho wheeltire by-law had been broken, no steps should bo taken in ' tho matter. RESIGNATION. A letter was read from Mr G. ' Cr Mnunsell pointed out that no f reasons were put forth by the proc motors of the movement for the steps 1 thoy were taking, ' s Cr Dagg said the sequel would be 1 than an application would bo made tor ■ a now riding, Tho promoters were 1 evidently anxious to avoid the road 3 taxation. The main road was the 1 only ono they were interested in, 1 Another thing he pointed out was ' that Dr Hoskiug's property was ' included in the boundaries of tho 3 proposed new district, and tho road ' leading thereto lay in the Masterton ■ District, Ho was not opposing the • petition, but it was tho duty of the 1 Council to protect the interests of tho • counter petitioners. i The Chairman said the signatures 1 to the petition would have to be • verified before the Council could deal 3 with it. He moved that the petition 3 be referred to the Cleric. 1 Cr Meredith pointed out that the ■ result of giving effect to the petition i would be that Wainuioru riding would ■ follow it up. It seemed to him that f whilo the new district would escape ' their road rates they would be let in : for a much heavier county rate, 3 Cr Maunsell, in seconding the ■ motion, said he thought it a very ' groat mistake to split the distrist up into small sections. He would like ■ tho deputation to show some cause or substantial reason lor their desire for • a separate district. The motion was 1 carried, '■ Mr 'Whatman said they had come forward to get a separation upon prei ciscly the samo lines that tho eight or nine other Boards had done.
