EKETAHUNA.

(From Our Own Correspondent), llib weather in tho early part of last week was tine, on Friday night, however, rain fell and continued on Saturday and Sunday with a very heavy downpour on tho latter day accompanied by high northerly winds. Mr W. Bayliss conducted divine service st the Wesleyun Church on Sunday, assisted by Mr Nicholls, of Wellington, who gave an excellent address on the materialism of the creation. On account of tho inclemency ofthe weather tlieattendance was not large, The contractor is making great headway (considering the weather), with the Makakuhi bridge. Pedestrians are now able to cross with safety. ' The Masquerade Ball in tho Town Hall on Friday last was not so well patronised as expected, No doubt the weather had something to do with it. Tho day was fine, but it had every appearance of being a stormy night. However, the mashers seemed ! to enjoy themselves. Considerable i amusement was caused at times i owing to the dancers being unable to . find their partners, caused, I am told, by the masks not allowing of the wearers seeing any other way than [ straight before them, Wife,: (Going to Misquerrde Ball), • ■' vVliat will he the inost attractive ! trimming for my dress ?" Husband, , (who doesn't approve of dancing), ) " Grass! You will hud. plenty of , calves there."

Tho petition for n third Justice of the. peace has been nurherously signed. The petition recommends Mr Thomas Baylies. A tatter selection could not have been made, the said gentleman being on tho Eketahunti School Committee, and also a member of tho Liceming Bench. MACCABR It will bo seen by announcement that this long oxpected and inimitable entertainer appears next Monday and Tuesday evening, He is assisted by a charming danseuie named Mdlle Minnia. The Australian press, speaking of their performance, says:—" Mdlle Minnia is one of Hie most fascinating actresses we have ever seen, and in her' Madrilena' shows the perfection to which the terpsichoreau art can bo brought." •' Wo can assure all the purists that this show is highly moral. It is dangerous only to vest buttons and ill-set bustles. We never laughed so much in our lives, and we have seen and hoard some good things. Anyone who can sit unmoved before such finished acting end dramatic skill must be an undertaker, or live next door to one. His imitation of Russell wis a splendid exhibition of musical talent. His Irish song was sung with a drollery all his own, and his accompaniment on the piano rovoalod the finished musician, His ventriloquial efforts are something wonderful, and delighted tho audience. His delineation ot the Badchffe Highway " dead beat " was intensely droll, and, as he said himself tragic too. It showed the violent contrasts to bo seen only in London streets and tho capitals of the worldexcessive wealth and abject poverty side by side. The Magic Statue introduced a series of surprises. Mdlle Minnia personates a new kind of Galatea, who fascinates the Collego Pygmalion. She danced a Highland lling with charming grace, also a Spanish dance, and fetched the houso, which insisted on. an encore. The entertainment in its varied characters and quick transisions, is free from all vulgarities and niggerisms. It fulfils its promise to the letter-' Begone; Dull Care,' While a fellow is under the spell he forgets even his mother-in-law, duns, bailiffs, and all the ills and worries of life, See Maccabe and die—of laughter." The Maunceville Hanger. (To the Editor,)

Sir.—A great cause for grumbling lias arisen here over the transfer of the County ranger. Mr J, Devonshire has, I understand, left the district for four months, and has transferred the ranging oyer to Mr H. Eagle junr,, during his absence, and I understand the settlers are not going to recognise Mr Eagle as a lawful ranpor. I think fcboy are justified in their action until he is lawfully appointed by the County Council. Why did Mr Devonshire not consult the County Council about the transfer of; the ranging so that it could have been advertised in the usual manner, and then the public would have been aware of Mr Eaglo's justification in taking their stock to tho pound, There were many complaints about the late ranger impounding a poor mau's horse or cow, which, would take, perhaps, more than tho poor man. could scrape together to release. At the same time the ranger, previous to going to his bed of a night, would turn his own cattle and horses out on the road, and if he was spoken to, said, "Oh, they must have, broken the fence during the night." .However, this old saying became rather stale in the ears of the settlers. Anyhow, it was not a right thing to do. I am aware that it was the ranger's duty to impound stock, but before doing so be should keep his own stock in his paddock. I hope the council !will see into the present transfer of ranging and settle the matter at once, because I consider it leaves Mr Eagle open to law.-I am, ete., John Vile, Ji/xk, i "• JtaioOTJlle, 2nd October,' JB§9, i
