CASE OF LEPROSY

The Wlmngarei correspondent of the Herald says there is a very bad case of "leprosy with a Maori at llerekmo. He lias seen tho man himself who had been to a Maori doctor and was pronounced incurable. Ho was also informed a Maori girl had died of the same diseaso at Herekino not long before.

Spurious Gold,

At the Magistrate's Court this morning, a Chinaman named Ah Sung was sentenced to (j months for selling spurious gold. It appears that the accused broke piecos of metal —copper, brass, or iron—and partly fused them in a crucible, and then painted them with gold paint. If a small quantity had been mixed ivith ordinary gold the imposture would not have been detected, Bank Directors. Auckland, Soptembe 80. The Death of Major Jackson,
Auckland, Sept 20,
Further particulars in regard to the disappearance of Major Jaokson show that the steward of the steamer (Hurtly) obtained his passonger ticket from him at 7.30 on Saturday evening. Major Jackson was then dozing in the smoking room, At 10 o'clock Kerr, the bedroom steward, went to Major Jackson's bunk in, order to see that tho cabin porthole was properly secured, but he heard someone—presumably the Major—sleeping in {ho borth, and did not disturb him. This was the last sign of tho. unfortunate gentleman, Next morning at 6 o'clock the bedroom steward went to the berth again to get the oocupant's hoots to havo thorn cleaned, hut he found tho cabin was empty, He thought nothing of the matter, behoving that Major Jackson had dressed and gone on deck. About two hours later Major Jackson was missed by the steward, and thorough search of the ship was made, but without success.
