The Chairman rcsd Ihe advertisement culling tlio meeting, also a letler from the County Engineer covering estimates, which read us follows, Iliuruna-Mangamaboo Boad. Metalling;^£7,34s4s 2J. Formation, £3IBB Os 9d, making a total of £10,532 Is 9d,' and if Hiatal js, fqund at a certain' point a reduction of will bo msdein cost of metalling, BketaliunaTenuiEoad, metalling, £3,07112s 4d, and if metal is found near tho .swamp this will be subject 10. considerable reduction.
The Chairman stated that nearly £IOOO of the latter was wit||in the Bbtahuna Bond District, and that a rat.', of |in the £ over the whole of Alfredton Eoed District would cover a lean of £3,200; he then invited discussion.
Mr Eli Smith on behalf of the ratepayers jp th, Tawataia Ward submitted somo resolutions passed at a meeting of ratepayers in that Ward as follows:—That it is not to the interest of the ratepayers on Ibis Road (Tawataiaj to rate themselves for metalling the I)keialmna-i\lfred-ton Road. That Mr Eli Smith bo requested to lay this resolution before the meeting ot ratepayers at Alfredton on September 20th. Mr Smith stated that the settlers had as much rates to pay for their own road as they could well afford, and that their outlet would be down the Mangaone iioad, which they hoped would be opened in the course of a couple of years.
Mr Warren enquired whethersettleis as far as a mileand a half would not vote for the loan, they at all events would use the main road, and they ought to be included, the settlers on the Tawataia Road would probably use the main rood for yeiifs, and lie thought after their long experience of a mud road they would do better to rato themselves for mntaljing the main road, in place of forming another mud road mid having to wade through that for years, Somo of tho ratepayers present seemed to think that some of the settlers in tho district would like to see tho road metalled so long as they wero not rated for it,
Mrli', Vonßcden stated that he had seen a lot of Ihe settlers along the road in the Eketahuna portion and thoy were in favor ot it being metalled and he purposed calling a meeting of thoso interested to consider the' ques. tion.
Messrs Marsh, Warren and some others spoko advocating the metalling of tho road and Mr Warren said that if they did not taljo advantago of the opportunity now they might foso the chance of getting it done for years, Mr A. Burling stated that there was lime stone in his place about three-quarters of a mile off the main road and if it was suitable Jie would allow the County to take w|iat they required free of charge, if liny toruind the road in and the metal proved suitable, the cost of making tho road would not in his opinion exceed £IOO,
After some further discussion Mr a. Bacon moved and Mr H, Warren seconded, That the County Council be requested to proceed with floating a loan for the purpose of completing the metalling on, tho Eketahuna (Tenui) Alfredton JKoad, tho Alfredton Boad ijoard in conjunction with Mr Von Reden to define tho area for rating purposes. A vote of thanks to the Chairman was proposed by Mr H. Warren and seconded by Mr Von Reden, the Chairman briefly responded and thanked ibe ratepayers for attending and tho meeting then terminated.
