DROWNED
Auckland, Monday, A French gumdigger named Francis was drowned on Saturday while proceeding in an open boat to the field where ho was working. The weather was so squally that his mates would not accompany him, and half an hour after he left, the boat capsized in a squall,
Fatal Accident.
Woodville, September 28.
A man named Kirby, employed on the Gorgo Works, met with a fatal accident this aftornoon. Ho was reaching for a ropa of the cage which spans tlm river tit the tunnel, when he slipped from the slage onto the rocks in the bed of the river, a depth of 20ft, His arm was shattered and his head split open, and death ensued shortly after. Nelson, September 33, Mr Mason, registrar of fricudly societies, delivered an address in tho theatre before a largo aasemhlagn of Oddfellows, Foresters and Bochabites. He spoke of friendly societies as institutions for wage-etrnerß thrift, and referred the failures of societies in England and America as a warning to New Zealand Societies charging inadequate contributions. Ho showed that the sickness rate is already higher in old established Lodges here than the English average, and defended the principals on whioh valuations were made, A large number of questions wore put to Mr Mason and answered. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded him, The Oamaru Seat, Oamauu, September 23. At tho nomination of candidates for tho Oamaru seat in the Hou6e of Representatives to-day, Mr T. W, Hislop and Mr D. N?\y Plymouth, Tuesday, Tho Gaidoch came off the hank in the Waitara River last evoning'and is uninjured. She leaves for Wellington this evening, Hotel Burnt.
Waipawa, Tuesday, The Urmondvillo Hotel was burnt down last night, fortunately there was no wiud, and the stores adjoining escaped, The hotel had just changed hands. The insurances are not known here.
