drowned in tho Manawatu Eiver on Tuesday through the capsizing of a punt. Deceased was 24 years of ago aud is believed to be a native of Blenheim, The body is not yet recovered.

Fire at Upper Hutt-
Wellington, Friday. , Tho Provincial Hotel at Upper Hutk was burnt down at 8 a.m. this morning, Tlio caused is assigned to [ a defective ohiranoy. The hotel was insured in tho London and Lancashire : Olfioe for £750, and the Colonial for £BOO. The stock and furniture was insured in the New Zealand Office for £SOO, and tho Union for £IOO, Richards, tho lessee, estimates his loss at £BOO above the latter amounts.
