A QUAGMIRE. A petition from ratepayers and others resident in George street was read, praying the Council would take steps to have the street put in passable order. Referred to the Works Com. mittee, CIIAUITABLE AID, Jkk , The chairman of the Southland County Council forwa'ded a.circuiar with certain proposed amendments in the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act. The principal alteration was in the direction of taking the cost ot administering the Act out of 'the consolidated revenue, On the motion of Or Gapper, seconded by Or T. Chamberlain, the clerk was instructed to reply that thisk Council will assist in amending thAr, Act in the direction indicated by tho \ Southland County Council to tho utmost of its power. QREYTOWN HOSPITAL, Tho Wairarapa Hospital Board demanded payment of the sum of £6l4s, amount due by tho Masterton Borough Council under the assessment mado by the Dnited Wairarapa Board. The Clerk was instructed to write for particulars as to how the pro. portion of the assessment was arrived at.. Cr Gapper said he was a meltter of the Board together with the Mayor as representatives of tho Council, but ho had received no notice of a meeting. The Mayor also stated that he had heard nothing of the meeting or if one had been held. ELECTMC LIGHTING, Tlio Gulchcr Electric Light Corapany wrote offering to supply the Borough with electric lighting, and sent estimates of cost, k Tho Town Clerk was instructed COP \ acknowledge the receipt of the letter -<' with thanks. A NUISANCE, Messrs Smith ife Hogg wrote asking the Council to abate the nuisance caused to them by thi sluice gates in the creek through the town damming the water back under their premises, the stagnant water causing a stench dangerous to health, Or Gapper moved that the matter stand over until a reply bo received from the Town Lands Trustees in reference to diverting the stream. Cr Heron seconded the rmtion and remarked it was only the water question cropping up in another form. The motion was carried, UNLICENSED PBEMISEB. Mr W. W. Scott wrote drawing attontion to a paragraph in a local paper that a dance was about to tako place in the Drill Hall on Friday niijht next, and tho premises were not licensed, The Miyor said if it was a privato dance thoy could not interfere in tha matter. There was no law to prevelk it that ho was aware of. If they injured Mr Scott in any way, he had his remedy. No action was taken in tho matter. SPECIFICATIONS, The Town Clerk was instructed to copy into a book specifications of all tenders called for. STOEET WIDENING. Dr Beard wroto stating he would bo prepared to meet the Works Committee, in reference to renting the fence to widen Perry street, * The Clerk saidDr Bcurd would not remove the fence in front of his own property,

Or Gapper said the Works Committee ducided it would be better to loave the foico where it was until the Owners of the property required it to bo shifted on Cole's estate, The Council could not do what Dr Beard wanted in running the fence straight across,

The Mayor said Mr Beetham was prepared to widen. Pcrry-stroet but there would be the projection at Mr Beard's, He would advise the Coui«li to erect tho fonce on the boundary. ; .

MBBARY MAN. The chairman of the Town Lands Trustees and the treasurer of the Mastcrton Borough Council wera appointed joint commissioners to invest the sinking fund set aside for paying off the Library loan. BUILDING REGULATIONS. CV Gappcr moved and Cr Heron seconded that the Town Clerk be instructed to visit Mr Hockley's premises and ascertain if the Regulations have been complied wilF in respect to his outbuildings, ACCOUNTS. An account for gas pipes, T, Ballinger, £lO 6s 9d was passed for payment, COMMITTEES. The various Committees were reconstructed as follows, three to form a quorum:—Public Yfoks— Crs Heron, T.
