EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent), i We havo hud some very stormy weather this week, On Monday there was a heavy gale from the north wost, coiitiuuingfortwontyfour hours, without rain. On 'i'uesd'ay morning thero was.a slight lull in the wind till midday, when rain commenced to fall, the wind at the same time increasing in violonco. Since then we have had one continuous downpour. All the creeks and the Maltakahi river are in high flood, The last named river is higher than I havo seen it before, and the lower part of Mr Jones' paddock is under water_ today (Wednesday). A large quantity of debris caiuo down, and some of it caught the swing bridge over the Makakahi and carried tho structure away. There is now no. means of communication between Parkvillo and, here, and as no start has been made with tho main yet, it will be rather awkward for the settlers in the Parkvillo district unless the rata clears, The midday train did not arrive on Wednesday, through a large slip blocking the line on the Masterton side of the tunnel. The mails and passougors were brought hero on a i roily. Hoveral bushfallers were here this week inquiring for men for bush work at Pahiatua, butwew unable to get any. If you have any of the unemployed at Masterton, send them to Pahiatua. Plenty of work for those willing to do it. The mail coach to Wopdviljo had a slight diljic.ulty in proceeding on Wednesday, tho Hood pouring over the approach to the Makakahi bridge at a depth of three feet. I hear of slips iu all directions along the main road, but with, tho exception of the sjip on the railway line, nothing sorlous. On Wednesday the post office at Mr Jines' stove was closed, and wo have now to walk half a milo for the mail, One or two settlers came to me, swearing like troopers, wishing to know if the Daily had anything to do with getting the post office moved to tho station. I told them it had not. "Well," said one of them, "whoever advocated tho removal wants 1" Well, if 1 wrote this word you would not publish it. Not much of a joke walking half a milo for your letters in this weather, Several cases are down for hearing at tho Magistrate's court to be held hereon Friday. _ In consequence of the representations that have been made to the County Council, theEketaliuiia public pound will be closed for v y(p. n}pnt]is for repairs, | '. Thursday morning, I The train from Wellington arrived hero last night, the slip at the tunnel having been cleared sufficiently to allow it to pass. I beg to suggest to the Koad Board that, pending tho erection of the Makakahi bridge, they place a chair on the wire, to onable the Parkvillo people to cross.
