SCHOOL OF DESIGN.
The School of Design, at Masterton, was .visited by., a.large number of ladies and'gentlemen' yesterday, who showed considerable interest in the really creditable display of art work exhibited for their inspection. The walls were lined with specimens of drawings, wator color sketches, ami oil paintings. Tho exhibits by Misw' Holmes, the instructress, were muckadmired. A sketch ; in oil of a familiar scene near the, Masterton Railway Station''wis .'true to nature-i Three oil paintings on Lincrusta cloth for panels or screens, daffodils, Maltese cross poppies, and bullrushes were beautifully executed. A collection of work by Mrs Good and Miss Cox, of Featuerstohi ■ which
included viows of Bon Nevis in oils j called forth very favorable comment, aud a gipsy girl in oil by Miss Cox, was very expressive The collections by Miss Ella andMabelPharazyn.aud Miss Kempthorne, still life groups, in water colours; and also the, exhibits,: by Miss Vou Stunner and Miss Alice' Perry wero a credit to both pupils aud teachers, A begonia rex, panel painting, by Miss Von Stunner, was beautifully shaded and coloured, A head from Life % ;Mrs Turner, of Feathcrston, was perfect in detail and a thorough picture. A fine screen of rare ferns, of the staghom ,~ and tongue variety, by Mr A. Bawson, was well executed, TliiT* 1 greatest attraction, however, to.,the. parents who attended Miss Holmes' ; "At homo" yesterday was the work oftlwMasterlon children, Pencildrawings by Hartleigh Ohisolm, Joseph Bennington, and Ernest Henderson showed considerable skill and still life groups, light and sliado in sepia, from the cast and time drawings by Lilian Beard, Ethel Brown,' and Lilian Von Stumer, all children .. under thirteen years of age, showed { remarkable proficiency, All who can should avail themselves of the opportunity offered them by this excellent institution of becoming proficient in an occupation calculated to give pleasure to themsolvoa aud othors, and to become possibly a source of profit in the future, .'■;'■■.
