The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. ' Present—Ors Horon (in tho chair), Culleu, Eton, Ganper, Perry, Filtou, Chamberlain, and Hessey. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From A. McColl regretting lie was unaware of the building regulations, and stating that he had now removed the structure sixty feet away from any other building. - It was resolved that no furtbor% Mion be taken, A synopsis of picturesque New Zealand was referred to the Library Commtttee. From W. B. Campin recommending the adoption of earth closets. JKofen'ed to the Sanitary Coniniittea for consideration. From Arthur B. Buuuy stating that he would hold the Council responsible for the preparation of a lease of a Government cottage to C. Blinkhorne. ; Left to the Town Clerk to report ' upon at the next meeting. From the Rev D. Fulton stating the idea of ilcensing tho Presbyterian Church was preposterous, and stating that no; meeting was held in the Church except in connection with the Church or Sunday School. From Miss Jeans demanding paymentof £5 for graveltaken, and £2O for damage done to her property by servants of the Borough Council. Cr Fitton said no trespass had taken place. The gravel referred to had boon taken from tho other aids of the river. Referred to tho Works Committee to enquire into and report upon.. WOKKS COMMITTEE. The report of the Works Committeo was road. The overseers reported upon certain repairs done during tho month. The committee recommended that the Town Lands Trust be waited upon to seo if they will assist in the cost of diverting tho stream running through town acre No 72, That Chapel Street from Hall Street be graded, and a culvert be put in at Perry Street. That Perry Street be kerbed on the north side, and tho culvert filled in. Cr Gappor explained tho proposed B deviation of the stream through town r acre No 72, and presented a diagram of the work. Tho alteration would permanently benefit tho property of the Town Lands Trustees. He proposed, That tho Works Committeo bo a deputation to wait upon tho trustees and lay tho matter beforo them. Or Fitton seconded the moffoi. Carried. It was resolved that the labour staff bo employed to grado Chapel Street to run the storm water towards fionall Street, The romaindor of the roport was adopted.

FINANCE. The report of tho Financo Committee was read and adopted. Accounts amounting to £lOl 10s fid were passed for payment, LiMURY, Tho Library Committeo report was read and adopted. SANITATION, Thelnspector of Nuisances reported on the impurities imported into thW. Waipoua river, and suggested that'* reward bo offered for the detection of anyone shooting rubbish or filth into tho river. If continued throughout the summer months it would bo dangerous to health, Tho Inspector also suggested that a piece of land should bo leased and securoly foncedon which rubbish might be deposited and burnt at intervals.

It was resolved to refer the report to the Wairorapa North County Council as they had control of the river. Tlic Inspector further reported upon the premises and back yards of the various properties throughout the borough. Three hundred and seventy-. four places wero visited^'Four only were lound bad, and forty medium. Altogether, lie thought the borough in a very fair state. In refcrenco to slaughter-houses, he recommended that the Sanitary Committee visit Mr Perry's slaughter-house and yards, with a new to recommonding a better system of drainage, The premises were not in jin unsatisV factory state at present. In references to nightsoil, he recommended that wooden nightsoil boxes should bo abolished and metal boxes used. That as only four streets camo under the compulsory clauses, certain others named should be added to the list where occupiers are compelled to have their boxes emptied by the coutrnotor, That as he (the inspector) had been palled upon to do extra work in making speoial inspection, ho be voted a sum ol £8 for snob services,

Carried, ORDINARY BUSINESS. Cr Dixon asked if tlio Works Committeo could recommend tint a rail be placed on each side of the bridge over tlio Makora stream in Columba road. It was stated that several other bridges were in asimilar state and no funds wero available for the work. Private tonders wero considered in Committeq, and the Council adjourned. A fulhnuster of tho Mastodon ltillo Corps is convened for Thursday evening at tlio Drill Sited, the business being tho election of Mr C. A. Pownall as Captain oftlio corps.
