ENGLISH. The Strike in London, London, August 27. It is reported that Burns, the Socialist lender, is using his influence to prevent arson turmoil, and pillage. The London Chamber of Commerce urges that the dispute should bo settled by arbitration,.. fearing that permanent injury will bo done to the trade of the port. Intimidatkn of new hands is reported to be increasing. The wharfingers support tho abolition of sweating and the middlemen. August 28. The Lignria's firemen have struck, and the Rnapehu's are threatening to follow suit; 90G coal hands in London have also struck. Messrs Nelson Bros, landed 180 carcases from the Fifeshire, but the strikers compelled them to desist from further operations. Now Zealand mutton has risen 2d pet lb.
Tho London shippers applaud Mr Tritton's suggestion that a London Dock Trust should supersedo the Dock Companies. Mr Isaacs, the Mayor olect promises to try and give effect to the proposal. The Dock Directors assert'that the shippers refuse to agree to arbitration,
The Kaikoura has 82,000 and the Fifeshiro 225,000 carcases on board. It is feared the latter's cargo will be destroyed unless coal can be obtained to keep the refrigerating machinery at work, bnt the Kaikoura is out of danger for the present, Tho Kaikoura has ten days coal on board, and it is hoped her cargo of frozen mutton will be saved, The strikers demand the abolition cfthe middlomen, and the direct engagement of laborers at Gd per hour in the day time, and 8d per hour overtime. Tho Directors of tho dock companies refuse to agree to those tonus.
