Auckland, August 21. A tender lias beon accepted foi repairing the graves in the Symondsstreet cemetery- of those officers who fell during the Waikato cam' paign.
A proposal has been made for a Baratonga team of crictcetors to visit Auckland, There is an inoreased demand for land in the Waikato district, and amongst other buyers there is a Chinese syndidate, who aro negotiating for tlw purchase of property near Hamilton.
Mr E. W. Payton, of London, formerly of Auckland, has been appointed master of the Elanv Free School of M and Design. Thirteen applications were received.

Mr William Scarlet, proprietor of the Standard Brewery, against whom 46 oharges of breach of the Beer Duty Act were made last week by the Collector of Customs, was this morning fined LIOO and costs on each of three eharges for having brewed beer in his bottling store, Tho cases had been remanded for a week, Mr Beethain held that the door between the two places, which are immediately adjacent, practically mado them one building. Mr Martin, Drown Prosecutor, withdrew tho other charges. At the annual meeting of the Christchuroli Poultry Society to-night the report showed how successful the last season's operations had been, as a profit of nearly LSO had accrued from the show recently held in the fiink. The number of birds actually exhibited then was 745, but these represented 1034 entries, certainly the largest ever held in New Zealand, Sydenham coming next with 641 birds for 759 entries, Wellington next, Tho election of a new committee, officers, and patrons, resulted in nearly all tho samo gentlemen taking part. Joseph Williamson, coach proprietor and driver, was fined £3 for cruelty in over-driving a horse till it dropped in the street exhausted,
Henry George Rogers, and George Henry Cook, two old offenders, were committed for trial to-day for stealing a quantity of cigars, cigarettes, and tobacco.
Ngakawau Coal. Westfort, August 21. The first consignment of coal from the Westport-Ngakawau Coal Company's mine has reached Westport, There aro twenty tons in bagd, and the sample will be forwarded to Port Pirieas a specimen of the material available here for coking purposes,
