EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Otvn Correspondent). Wo have had a long spell of quite summer weather, and dry up to Tuesday evening, when rain fell, but • not enough to do any good, On Saturday another bush accident occurred to a man named Gutrchalk, while busbfelling at Mangatainoke; ho got hit by a branch of a rata trco across the face; ono nf his ears was split quite in two; he was likowiscW injured about the face. The sufferer ~ was brought iuto Ekelahuna and attended to by Constable Roche. I hear that tho injuries are not sufficiently serious to necessitate his removal to the Hospital, Debating Society,
The above Society held its usual meeting on Tuesday. There was a, fair attendance of members flS&rh largo number of visitors. The minutes of tbo previous meeting w.ero read and confirmed. The President, Mr Copping, called on Mr Penny to open the debate on the subject" Is self lovo (ho only motive of action of mankind," Mr Penny in tho affirmative, very ably put forward evidence in support of his argument. At the same time I could net holp thinking that this gentleman was arguing against his own convictions, Mr Munday in the negative, read a paper in support of his side of (he question. There is no doubt that this gentleman will becomo, after a little more practice, a very able, debater, Several other gentlemen, V including Mr dimming took part in the debate. After a very ablo sum- - ming up by tho Chairman, the meeting decided in favor of tho negative by ono vote. The subject set down for debato for next week is " Will the extension of the railway to WooMle benefit this district," This is a subject that is oceupviijjfthe settlers mind just now. No doubt there will be plenty to say on the question,
There are more happy faces just now, that is t&sayinthobusinesscoinraunity of Eketahuna, than I remember to have seen before. Almost, everyone you meet asks the question " Have you heard the good news ? They have got Beckman." I really believe that if Beckman had not been caught, one halt tho people here would have gone bankrupt. It seems that there is scarcely one here in any i
line of business liiat this gontlemim don't owo money to. The tenders for tho ereotion of tlie bridge across the Makakahi sho.uld have been opened on Thursday," according to advertisement, but only two mornbors attended tho Board, Mr Neilson and Mr Bright. Truly tho affairs of the ratepayers aro in curious hands, and rather put tho tendorers to inconvenience, I should think. Will some ono lot the ratepayers i know tkoreason of tho non-attendance S of members of the Ekotahuna lload * Board?
