Engineer's Report

The following is the report of the Engineer, Mr 0. E. Bremner,

presented to the meeting of the./J Council on Tuesday and adopted:— Masterton Riding.— Masterton to Waimata Hoad.—The contract for

sheeting ovor the surfaces of several Df the County bridges has not been

completed as I anticipated would be the case by the present sitting of. the

Council. The contractor has been

disappointed in the "timber supply

from the Kaitoke mills, and has in

consequence been prevented from finishing the work a week ago. It is

anticipated, however, that the balance

will bo forwarded at once and the w remainder of the work executed by the close of the current week. The 1 - stone-breaking works on the To Ore Ore are now sufficiently advanced to permit of my commencing repairs and tor carting on the Masterton to Kahumingi section will be invited at an early date, The absence of a gravel reserve on the Te Ore Oro flats is a want which has long been felt upon this section of the road, and I would suggest to the Cjuncil the advisability of endeavouring to seouro a siteof three acres in the rainity o!|f the old gravel pit near Mr Peroy'a residence. The freehold of this which formerly was the difficulty has now been acquired by the owners of the Te Ore Ore estate, and I imagina little difficulty will bo cncountored in making arrangements lor purchasing a suitable site. The boundary fence of the Taueru pound reserve lias boon substantially erected, together with that enclosing the acre leased from Mr John Morrison in terms of my report of 14th May last. Such repairs as were rendered necessary to the Kahumingi road embaukments j by the heavy rains of last month, |& were duly executed with the least "F possible delay and the line restored 1 to all descriptions of traffic with little or no inconvenience to the public.

To Oro Oro Bideford Road.—Tlio condition of tin's road is good throughout, The .portions metalled last summer have been carefully raked together and the larger stones broken and placod along tba ruts. It will be necessary before opening wool season's heavy traffic on this lino to. make some substantial temporary repairs to the Wangachn Bridge, The funds from separata rates, arf the Council are aware, are no more than sufficient to cover the coat of maintenanoo as proposed and passed by the Council- in the estimates of last May for the current year, It will therefore be necessary for the Counoil to sanction an extra, ordinary expenditure in anticipation ot noxt year's rate, to execute such repairs as may be found necessary to keep tho bridge open for traffic, Should the Council approve of this course I will endeavour to prepare allJfr necessary information with respecflJT. to cost and nature of work, and submit the proposals for the consideration of the Council at its noxt sitting. Castlepoint Riding—Masterton to Waimata Road—Rough surveys have been made of the proposed metalling of road deviation at Sugar Point and ISorokoko Terrace, and the probablo cost of these works will be laid before tho Council, It is to bo regretted that no suitable metal has been discovered in the vicinity of the Sugar Point section, the metal for which will have to bo obtained at considerable extra outlay frotn what is known as the Deep Creelt quarry, some distance from tho road. At Rorokoko terrace it will be possible by the proposed alterations to reduce the present grade of lin to lin 111, as well us to more evenly regulate the curves and increase their radius. The materials for metalling this portion of tho road are readily obtainable in close proximity to the work. The Tenui to \VlmkatakL_ soction of this road is tlio only which has in any measure suffered from the late rains. Several slips of more or less magnitude have occurred wlncb necessitated the employment of extra labor in their removal. At the junction of the Tinui Valley road with this lino it will be nectary during next summer to makewme alteration m tlio location of about 12 chains of road, or procure the consent ot Mr Walter Johuston to a diversion, of a stream through his property to preserve the present line from destruction, I would therefore suggest that the Council communicate with Mr Johnston with a view to obtaining his sanction to one or other of tho alternatives.

Alfredton Riding—Opalri to Masterton Road—This lino throughout is in fairly good working order. The boundary between tliis .and the

Paliiatua County lias been fixed upon tlio ground, and tho roadman will ereot a, substantial mark for the guidance of tho maiuteiwnco contractor in tbo other County. Contract No 25 (survey of tho Eketaliuna township road). The plans of this work aro reported to be lindor examination of tho survey . department in Wellington.
