Wellington v. Wairarapa-

The annual trial of strength between the above teams was played on the Recreation Reserve, Qreytown, on Saturday afternoon, Tho Wellington team arrived by the first train and were met at tlio railway station by tho Reception Committee of the local/Union- and were driven to Host Jones', Foresters' Arms Hotel, where lunch was partaken of. The match excited great interest throughout the district, as a good game was fully expected, and a largo crowd which assembled was not disappointed on this score, for from beginning to end the contest was exceedingly fast, and some fine exhibitions of both combined and individual play were seen, The ground was in splendid order, the portion reserved for cricket being used on this occasion. The following were tho team Wellington (black), fullback, Collins; threequarters, Thompson, F. Fairbrotber, and Roberts; halves, Nichollß (captain), Moorebouse; forwards, Cockcroft, Bridson, Conlton, Johnson, Moore. Reich, Campbell, Mcliityre; umpire, Mr H, Jfcpardle, Waifarapa (green) —Back, E. S, Jlirschberg (captain); three-quarters, C. Perry, 13, Udy, Kalaugher, McCarthy; halves; J. Perry, Baumber; forwards; Day, G. Wcbh. Amos, Mitchell, C, Fairbrother, Tyler, Watson, Percy; umpire, Mr A, L, Webster; Mr G. H. Smi'b was appointed referee. Perry here distinguished himself with some splendid tackling, collaring three of the visitors in succession, before they had hardly time to move, McCarthy put in a nico run and Baumber shortly afterwards marked and placed for U, Perry, and the ball went very close to the coveted posts, Udy returned the kick out, and a second force down resulted. Collins put the bull in touch at half way, but the green forwards soon took i<i to the visitor's twenty-five flag. Moorhouse made a lot of ground, but this was neutralised by a fine kick into touch by McCarthy in Wellington ground. F. Fairbrother mado a good run, but had tosuccumb to Kalaugher. McCarthy got the ball, and with a long kick put it into touch close to his opponent's line, the wind assisting greatly. From the throw in, Baumber got possession, and running in front, potted an undeniable goal, amidst' great applause. Wellington kicked off, and McCarthy once more returned, the ball going into touch in goal. Tho visitors took the play to half way, but the local men responded by taking it busk, and Roberts kicked into touch at his own twenty-five. The play went across tho field, and Amos headed a loose rush, but Johnson and Cockcroft came through and took the leather to the middle flog. Fairbrother kicked into touch, and a Black rush went inside the Wairarapa ground, Cockroft being to the foro, Udy, Day, C. Perry and Mitchell got the leather in turn and avortjd the danger by going to half way, Watson got on to Collins before he could get away, and play was once more in the Black's territory, Fast play took the oval to Wairarapa's 25, but Baumber got possession and put into touch at half way. Mclntyre and Johnson got on a nice dribble/ and got to the local teams twenty-five before they were stopped. Roberta got hold of the leather and potted, but only a " force" resulted, the ball going along the ground, C, Perry kicked out with a fine" drop" and fast play took place on the Wellington side of tho ground. Collin?, picked up very smartly, but was grandly tackled by Joe Perry before ho could get his kick, and the Wellington line was again in danger. Eoberts averted the danger with a good run, but the reprieve was a short oue, as play was soon back at the old spot, the wind being greatly against the efforts of the visitors to remoye the scene of play. F. Fairbiotlier got away but had to go down before 0. Perry, aud Eoberts was grassed by Baumber. C. Perry made a long drop, and Collins put the ball into touch at his own twenty-five, and Fairbrother kicked into touch at halfway, A rush headed by Johnson placed the Wairarapa line in danger, but tljo local men, working well together, shifted the scene to their opponent's ground, Some passing by Roberts and Fairbrother made a lot of ground, but TCallaugher came to the rescue and uiade a fino run, tho ball being in neutral territory when the whistle went for" half time," tho score standing Wairarapa 3 points, Wellington nil. With tho wind in their favor tho Wellington reps anticipated little difficulty in wiping out this score, and the way in which they went to work looked as if it was going to be the case. Wairarapa kicked off, and Roberts returned into touch at half; way, Batmiber bounced the leather in and made a fine run and Wellington were forced down, The kick out sent- the ball into the Wairarapa. end, but passing by. Weloli, Watson, and Day gained a lot of ground, By a loose rush tho visitors got into the Wairarapa twenty-five, and Thompson potted a neat goal. This put matters on an equal footing, and the supporters of the Wellington reps were jubilant. Joo Perry followed up the kick off, and got on to tho ball before it could be returned, and scrummaging took place in the Wellington twenty five, The same player and Watson dribbled tho ball over the line, and tho Mnstorton half touched down, C. Perry took the place, hut failed to increase the score, After this, some tight scrummaging took place, of which Wellington had rather the best. The green forwards got the oval loose and took it to the visitor's goal line, but only a force down resulted, From the kick out play was taken to Wairarapa's twenty-five, and Wellington secured a free kick close to the goal posts, Nicholls took tho place, an exceedingly easy one, but failed. Tho" greens" played up and took the leather to the half way flag, but soon after had to Bubmitto another •' force " from a long kick. Roberts put the ball in touch on Wairarapa side of tho middle flag. Watson, Mitchell, J. Perry and Day then got the oval in front of them, and made a magnificent rush from their own side of the ground right down to the Wellington line, and thelatter touched ilown amidst tremendous applause. E, Udy took the "■ place," but ho also failed to convert it. Bamber returned the kick out into touch at the centre. Mitchell and Percy headed a rush, and J. Fast play ensued up and down the ground, and" no side" was soon after called, with tlio ball near the centre, The game thus ended in favor of the local team the score being Wairarapa one goal and two tries (live points), Wellington one goal (three poiuts). These Jfife players got on to the Wellington backs time after time, and were greatly instrumental in confining' tho play to the visitor's quarters. Among the Wellington men Roberts and Fairbrother (back), and Johnston, Molntyre, and Cockcroft (forward) wore conspicuous for good play, At the conclusion of the game cheers were exchanged by the teams and the. Wellington men returned home by the last train.

The in.itch Mastertou Juniors r Fliixiuilleis took place on the grougfcr of the fciuier on Saturday in the piesence of a good number of spectators. Tho game from stare to finish ; was in favor of the Juniors, who showed great combination throughout, and whose passing we have not seen surpassed or even approached by any team this season. On the other hand tho flaxmen were very demoralised and at times allowed their opponents to romp over them, When no side was callod, the score stood— Juniors, five points (five tries), Flas millers, nil, the former failing convert any of their scores. For the Juniors Homislow, Green, andßaillie,. backs, and Owen and Hockley, forwards, distinguished themselves, wbilo for the Flaxuiillors, T. Wrigley and Hyde, backs, and Argjlo and J. Russell, forwards, were the most prominent.

On Saturday next the fifteen which played against Wellington will play a seventeen at Carterton. The seventeen will be selected this evening, and the final team for tho match against Maoris on Monday next will be after the trial game.
