EKETAHUNA.

(From Our o\yn Correspondent), 4 cqncorfc will be given here shortly, having for its object the raising of funds for the building of a publio hall at Nowraan. In last week's letter I gave you an insight of tlio money that had heen lost in the district through defaulting debtors, mainly caused through the want of a Magistrate's Court. The usual course up to the present has been that parties wishing to sue for debt would make an application to the constable, swear an affidavit before a Justice of the Peace, on those terms a summons would be issued trom Masterton, Now, Sir, that concession is denied us, A resident here applied for a summons in the usual manner, the application with affidavit and cost of service was forwardpd to Masterton, a reply is sent back by the Olerk of tlje Court, Masterton, that no affidavits will bo received, that tlio person requiring a summons must apply in person, That raeons t\yo trips, if not more, Could any bett.er method be adopted than the foregoing to destroy business in the Forty Mile Bush. A petition is going round for signatures, asking Miss sYecthyto reconsider hor determination ot leaving the District School. Every one here seems anxious to retain Miss Freethy in the town. Mr William Baylis ijientioned tho matter on Sunday, and that a social tea party would be given to Miss Freethy in the Church on' Fridiy next, at 5.50 p.m., to aliow (in the words of Mr Baylis) "the respect and esteem this lady is held ici by tho community,"

At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday before Messrs A. Anderson and F. Yon Reden, J.P.'s. In the adjourned assault case, Mary Jano Beckman v, Mary McNeale, was heard. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was lined five shillings and costs seven shillings. The Debating Society held its usual meeting on Tuesday last, there was a fair attendance of members. The subject lief ijown for debate next Tuesday 13 '* will the Abolition of Taxation eradicate IJrunkennes," There is talk of a grand fancy dress ball to bg jjeld in tlie new hall shortly.
