FOOTBALL

The ground was in splendid condition, being light and springy, in every way suiting the tactics of the winners, who, by their splendid play throughout the game, und the way they fairly romped over the best fifteen Greytown could select, surprised even their most ardent admirers, Tn the Star team Kemeni and Mawhinay replaced two absentees, Patterson and Ewington. Messrs Knell, (Greytown) and McKenzio (Stars) wero chosen umpires, and Mr J, Pelling, referee. Play was commenced a little after three, by D'Arcy kicking off, Kalau. ghcr returning'to touch, Almost immediately the Stars rushed down, and were awarded a free kick in close proximity to the Greytown' goal but Pelling failed in the place, Greytown responded with a loose rush, Mitchell and Beard leading, but were stopped by Bemeni screw kicking jnto touch, On tho ball being thrown in l'elling passed to Thompson, who ran from half way on to tho coveted line, where Knlaugher managed to loosen bis hold of tho leather, and Greytown forced. On resuming, Pelling obtained Udy's kick out, and ran till he encountered Kalaugher, leaving the ball to the forwards, who, by a strong loose rush carried the ball over the line, and Hoar touched down making i first score. Thompson made a good effort to increase, but it resulted in a poster. Udy ran well up along .the line, but dropped tho hall, and from some forward play Tully seoured a ; mark in tho Star territory, and placed for Udy, but it went wide of the ! posts. Another rush tho whole • length of the field, Iggulden and Wilsono to the front, resulted in the former getting over the line, from i which Thompson kicked a clover i goal, Kalaugher ran, but H. Houni slow being in the way, passed to Udy, i who was collared by Frcetli, Scrums followed, and half time was called with the score Stars four points, Greytown nil. ' From Greytown's kick off Watson marked, aud kicked to Tully, who was stopped in his run by Pelling. JjVeeth and Hoar essayed a telling dribblo, and soon after Pelling made a pretty pass to Thompson, who made the run of the day, eluding all the backs, and touched down near the corner flag, amidst cheers. D'Arcy' took the kick but failed. Qreytown was now - playing wholly on the defensive, tho running of the Star backs, and the dribbling of the forwards being ' magnificent. Thompson again ran in, but knocking down the corner , flag with his feet was ruled to be touch-in-goal. Soon after, the visitors rushed down the field, and were awarded a free kick, but Pelling ■ failed- in the place. This player following up well, touched down, drawing first blood for Greytown.' 1 Udy kicked, but the ball fell short. 1 From the kick 'out, Kalaugher obtained possession, arid from near ' the half way flag made a splendid i kick, tho ball just going over the > bar.' The score was now, Stars five ■ and. Greytop fojjr pojnts. From ■ kick oft 1 , tho (jrpyioyn forwards by ' good fast work, took the boll again to i t]io Star's twenty-fiva (lag, but , Thompson getting hold, once more
evaded the opposing backs, dashed across the liuo, and taking the kick, landed another neat goal. A grand rush by Greytown, placed tlioStar line in jeopardy, hut it was soon relieved by a good run and long kick by D'Arcy. The last quarter of an hour was very exciting, each team trying their utmost lo score and prevent being scored against. An exciting chase, in which Kalaugher raced with Thompsou, and resulting in the latter losing his hold of the leather, was followed by Udy running well down the field, V after which the whistle was sounded for time.
It would beinvidious.tonameany of the backs of for superiority in play,'*. : they one and all excelled themselves in the opinion of the onlookers, playing with good judgment, their running and passing being the feature of tho day's play. The forwards also played exceptionally - Well, and seemed from the commencement to be determined to show what they could do on a favorable ground, The visitors played a very plucky .' ? uphill game, but thoir three-quarters wero too well marked by the opposing "wings" to be able to show their usual form, The forward division quite upheld their reputation with their fast dribbling rushes, in which thev excel, Mitchell and Harry Tully being of ttimes conspicuous.
Carterton v. MastertonThe second senior cup match between these two clubs was played on the Worksop Road ground Saturday, and, as was anticipated, the ' Masterton men proved much too good for theij opponents, winning by seven points to nil. Mr Jos, 'Williams acted as referee, and the 'game com-
menced about three o'clock. Carter-
ton kicked off, and the play at once became fast, the Masteiton twentylive being the scene of the struggle for a timo, but by good combined work tho leather was shifted to the other end, C.Perry, by a fine run, got over the Carterton line and touched down. The samo player T took the try at goal, and by a mugnirficent kick increased tho score. In
the second spell J. P.erry took the oval at his feet into Carterton's Iwenty-Qvo, where 0. Perry picked up and again ran in, and phuod tho leather under the posts. Smith, with a neat kick converted the goal.
Shortly before time was called Day, Bttnnistjt, and Eockell took tho ball to the Carterton line, and the latter picked up and ran behind, but the kick at goal only resulted in a posteiy Carterton failed to score throughouw the game. Mastertou were forcedT down several times, but these-were the result of long kicks, and only twice was tho home team's lino in danger, For the winners all the backs played well, hut Hill was particularly conspicuous with his splondid kicking, playing with great judgment, and using hia feet to great advantage for his side.' C, and J, Perry also did great service, the former with his running and kicking, and the latter
doing some fine dribbling, R, Hirschberg played a cool game at full back,, : and also kept his team well Among the forwards C. Holmwood, Baunister and Day were always well
to the front. For Carterton Baumber and McCarthy did groat service behind the scrum, the latter especially being very noticeable. In tho forwards Fairbrothev and Eagle showed good form, though tho latter seemed to shun the scrums.
A meeting of the committeo of tho Committeo of tho Wairurapa Rugby Union was held on Saturday evenjm Present,-Messrs R. S, Snodgrass. It was decided that tho Mastertonv. Star match should be played on Saturday next. Tbo representative of the Star
Club received no notice of the meeting on Saturday evening, and on this
grouud thoy aro perfectly justified in
objecting to play next Saturday, but in view of the matches with the Maori team and Wellington representatives,
and also the proposal to send a Wairarapa team south, it would be as well to waive this objection, as tho loss of a Saturday would interfere with a practice of combined teams fot the purpose of selecting represer£ tatives for the forthcoming match«T It is necessary that there should be a practice before tho team is solocted, and then the final team should have an opportunity of playing togethor before tackling such tough customers as tho Maori team and Wellington representatives. We understand the Stars hdvo no objection to play other than tliey had no notice of the meetMtoo that it is to be hoped thoy willßce thoir way to get tho cup contests over as soon as possible. The affairs of the Union aro certainly being carried in a rat-hor haphazard manner, but we trust individual Club's will not allow this to stand in the way of the gona.ial interests of the game. We hear the Groytown and Carterton Club's have arranged a practice for Saturday next, the Carterton backs to piny with the Greytown forwards, and the Groytown bucks with tho Carterton forwards, Tha Ponekes beat tho Athletics for the Wellington Championship on Saturday by 18 points to 3,
