About 11 o'clock yesterday a serious accident occurred at tho now bridge which is boitig constructed across the Makakahi river, about 200 yards away aud directly in front of Mr Janes' Temperance Hotel, by Mr Jlryant, tho contractor, The river wlioro it is being bridged is about a hundred feet across, and tiic depth to the rivor bed is about 80ft, Tho bridge is to consist of one span, aud it was owing to the want of Btronsth in the stage or Bcafiolditi" to support tho necessarily heavy timber, requisite for such a span, that the accident occurred. It was while the last piece ot tho top cord was being put on to tho stago that it gave way; no notice whatever was given, for directly the cracking was heard the whole structure was immediately precipitated to tho bed of the river. Throe rneu were on tlio scaffold at the time, two of thorn, by promptitude in running, managed to escape, but tlio third, a Mr O'Brien, becamo confusod, and not knowing which way to run, went to tlio bottom, and was so mixed up with, the massive pieces of timber that it is surprising his life was not iminediatetly crushed out of him, Ee was doubled up, some of tho timber above and some below him. When extricated lie had to be earned along the rivor some considerable distance before it was possible to got him on to tlio bank. Ho was brought to Mastcrtpn by train, and conveyed to the hospital wlioro lie was at once attended to by Dr Hoslang. Tho exact amount of injury could not bo ascertained last-niyht as the man's exhausted stato would not admit of a minute examination. The loft arm lias sustained a compound fracture at the elbow, and it is conjectured, some of the ribs on the left side will bo found brokon as tho cases of his watch were crushed in, It is possible the accident may prove fatal, It is stilted that no blame can rest with Mr Bryant tho contractor, as his scaffolding was the design of an engineer who enjoys considerable reputation for this class of work, and that the theory is excellent, although in this particular instanco tho computations were found to be below tho necessary strcn?tli for sustaining a structure which would woisdi about eighty tons, but it

is also reported on the other hand that instructions from tlio Engineer to supplement the staging with a wire ropo were disregarded. Tho stago )iiid Bubsiflcjd about an inch the day befpre the accident, but no Rive in tho timbers could be detected, '{ho loss to tho contractor will be about tlireo hundred pounds as everything is lost, the whole of the bridge timber is broken up and in falling it has pulled the piors from the banks with it,
