TRIAL OF LOUIS CHEIIS. Wellington, Monday. The trial of Louis Cliomis for fclio murder of Thomas Hawlangs, near Kaiwarra on May 81, began before the Chief Justice to-day. Mr H. D. Bell, anil Mr M. Bichmond appeared lor the Crown, Mr 0, Bunny and Devine for tbe prisoner. The Chamber was crowded. A large map of the country surrounding the scene of the crime was displayed on an easel for the benefit of the jury, and on the table wore photographs of the place and of the pieces of paper taken from the wound in the body; also photo lithographs of the Evening Post showing the lire of fissure for the purpose of enabling a comparison. Mr Bell opened for the Grown, and so far has been taking much the same line as at the Magistrate's Court, Ho said though no blood was found on the prisoner's clothes there had been plenty of time to removo all traces before the police appeared. Ho detailed the discovery of the paper in the wound fitting the issue of the Evening Post of March SSird, in Cliomis' house, and told the jury this paper was the cardinal point on which the issue hung. The jury have now gone out to view the scene of the I murder.

July 6. it the annual meeting of the Farmer's Co-operative Society of Canterbury to-day the balance-sheet showed net profits for tho year L 7150 12s Id, adding the balance brought forward from last year LIOO3 IDs 7d; the total amount to be dealt with is LB5l-1 lis Bd. The directors proposed the usual dividend 7 per cent bonus, four per cent on called up capital; also a bonus of four per cent on shareholders' purchases of merchandise during the year; they also decided to write off 20 per cent off items, machinery and office furniture, and to add to the reserve fund LISOO, the balance to bo carried forward. The directors propose a further issue of 3000 new shares at a premium of half-a-crown, the premium to be added to reserve fund.

Mail ServiceAuckland, July 7. The French Colonial Department at Tahiti propose to establish a mail service between Tahiti and Honolulu, via Apia, to connect with the San Francisco service at Honolulu, It is stated that tho object of this service is to establish with America, via Samoa, more direct communication and faster transmission of mails and passengers to San Francisco, and that if it is established, a great portion of the Tahitian trade may be taken from New Zealand,

M.S. Orlando- . Auckland, July 7. H.M.S. Orlando, with Admiral Fairfax aboard, arrived at 7.30 this morning. The news of the Dart's safety was communicated to the Admiral on the Orlando's arrival, and as maybe surmised, the intelligence was very gratifying to him, as well as to the officers and crew.
