The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JUNE 1889. The Representation of Masterton.
.We fear that the prospect -pf the .Masterton electorate being represented in the House during; the present session ■ is ; a somewhat poor ono, Under any-circumstances the loss of representation', for a session is unsatisfactory, and we have no desire to palliate thejnoonvenience which it may involve, Itis extremely probable that Mr George Beethain's health will not permithim to reach.New Zealand before the spring. He faced last winter in New Zealand and then had to encounter the' asperities of an English Christmas, and he does hot care to endure the 'third, consecutive winter Beason that would fall to.his lot were he to immediately return to the colony. This being the case, he authorised his friends intbe electorate to take any course which might be»t serve the interests of the constituency. They are. practically iii a position to immediately lodge his resignation in the hands of c the,Speaker,'or, ii they consider that, leaveof -absence for' the 6'ession may "bo-granted "to him without undue injury to the constituency, he is willing to remain M.H.R. for Masterton and, continue the connection with-ittie; electors "which' hasncw existed for a dozen conseou. tive years. The responsibility of a decision between 'these two alternatives ' now rests with Mr Beetham's friends, and steps are being taken to obtain their opinion on the subject. The dilemma is perhaps a little more diffioult than it seems: : tb be.: The best informed authorities in Wellington, predict a-phenomenally .sLort session, ..and: :: ;were'.Mr/Beetham's resignation:handed iii : at ohce;Hhe work of the session, would praotically be closed before" his' successor 'could be elected, 'Then again,- it would not be 'ewi to; find a"candidate .who would command; as' large; a measure of confidence .in,; the - constituency, or who... wouldV- carry as iniioh weight in the House, as jhe present member,v v The question therefore arises as to whether an; eleetion. at the present juncture or a joss to .the We .have ho. wish to express a strong bi^decided. opinion.
