Eefeerinq to -Mr" 6.-' BeetWs absence from-New Zealand, our local contemporary writes as follows :

Before taking steps to convene a meeting to consider the representation of (ho constituency, wo invite Mr Beetham's Mends, or any of his constituents who may be in his confidence, to submit to tho public any information or explanation they may have to offer on his uohalf.

It is impossible to dissociate, from this iiivitatiou the fact that the writer of is is the unsuccessful candidate whom Mr Beetham defeated by a large majority at the last general election. He may convene a meeting, and he no doubt could rake up amongst his friends a sufficient number of supporters to.,carry any resolution he might bring forward; but the certainty that his party is a minority in the constituency, remains unaltered, and it will be the duty of the party which' constitutes a majority to determine whether aotion is necessary, No doubt, before many days are over, further information and explanation will be received from Mr G. Beetham himself, When our member last wrote, he was in ill-health at Florence, Mr Beetham in the past bus been an unselfish politician, and is not likely to recklessly .place his constituents in a false position at the present juncture. That we have selfish politicians ready to take advantage of his " physical infirmity," by jumping his seat is obvious. Of course, on an emergency like this there is a' chance of a bold candidate snatching a seat, even though his party is in the minority. This .is a greater danger than Mr Beetham's absence, and would be a moro serious misfortune than even the lack of representation for a whole session.
