LOUIS CHOTS IN COURT. Charge of Murder. Wimington, Tuesday. At the Magistrate's Court the adjourned hearing of the case against Louis Cherais on the charge of having murdered Thomas Hawkings came on to-day, John May was in the vicinity ot the Khandallah railway station on the evening of tho 31st May waiting the arrival of the train.from Wellington, He heard two shots tired in the direction of the farm belonging to deceased, Cross-examined: Wassarprised nt hearing shots, iu, although it was the shootiug season, it was too dark at tho time to See anything. Wilson, a reporter, sUted' he visited the scene of the murder next morning, Ho found a scrap of paper, part of the Evening Post of the 23rd May in the gorso fence near the bend in the road where the first shot is supposed to have been fired. On the production of the-piece of paper it \yas found tho dale did not correspond with witness' statement, the dato being 22nd March' Witness explained he had not looked at the date, but had been led to believe it was a paper of 23rd May by a paragraph printed on the paper in reference to a picnic to be held next day, which, lie had supposed meant Queen's Birthday, Inspector lliompson deposed to visiting the scene of the murder on the Ist June. He found scraps of paper having every appearance of having been burnt with powder, lying about the road and in thegorte fence. He produced portions of newspapers found in tho pockets of accused, He said he proceeded to the house of accused with detectives to search the premises, The gun found by Detective Benjamin was a double-barrelled muzzloloader. The detective put his finger in the muzzle, and as he withdrew it remarked'to witness, "This , has been recently discharged." He also,found a stiletto, . . ;■ ; Cross-examined :• He examined the stiletto for blood stains but could not . find any. ..There was verdigris on t'jo hilt to the extent of a quarter of , an incbj;' There was. .to j indicate it had been recently used. | '; ■ (Left Sitting).
