THE Kaiwhara Murder.

1 Wellington, Friday, ; TheR.M, Courtwascrowded this r morning when Louis Cliemis was • charged, on remand, with having murdered Thomas Hawkiugs. Mr 0, E. Bunny with Mr Deviuo appeared for the accused, and Mr H. D. Bell appeared for the Crown, All witnesses were ordered out of Court, Mr 801 l briefly described the locality whero the crime was committed, and the circumstances under which tho body was found. He briefly summarised tip the evidence which he intended to produce, which was merely a recapitulation of the facts * already known, except that he men- < tioned pieces of paper that had been 1 used as wads in the guu, would play 1 an important part in tho evidence. One piece of paper found • on the ground near where the murder ' was committed fitted exactly that 1 extracted from the wound in the body 1 of deceased, aud these two pieces 1 fitted a torn Evening Post of 17th ' November, 1888, found in prisoner's ' house. Other shreds of paper found < at the scene of the murder also fitted < a paper found in accused's house 1 dated 23rd May, 1889. It would be ' proved beyond the possibility of 'J doubt that a fragmont of the paper t which entered Hawkhig's body in t front of the shot was a portion of the > paper found at the house of Chomis. 1 This would bo the mam evidence r against accused, and he had but 1 littlo doubt a prima facie case J would bo established, At accused's 1' houso a dagger aud double-barrelled 0 gun were found, the latter having 1 been . recently discharged; also « roughly oast bullets, aud as these P did not fit tho barrel of the gun, it 0; was suggested that a large quantity paper would be required as wads. „ Cliemis. explained that the gun had pi been fired at a quail, and the dagger ol had not loft its sheath-for a long " ( time.
