''Monopoly."
(To tlie Editor.)
Sir,—l wag induced by the vepresentation of many of my, friends here to start an ironmongery -'stow, in your gay and festive - city,. they assuring me. that it only required a little, energy. and a decent stock of useful ironmongery to ensuro'success. I did so, as you are aware, and there. was.' at one. time a. genenal feeling that this was a boon to the city, and. I got a fair amount of support, because I had brought'the prices down, and .the publio were enabled to buy ironmongery at a satisfactory figure. But it seems that aa soon bb they thought tho ."Monopoly" was broken they only then supported me in a half-hearted sort of manner, the consequence being that I must retire unless! wish to make a very serious loss; this I am not prepared to do, I am doing a very good business in Wellington, and if the public in Masterton cannot support a ; wellknown, long felt want without me contributing to it by losing my money, well, they must put up with the high prices they -had to pay before I started my venturo. The publio here are really to blame, 1 have always done my best to ensure success by keeping a good article, and selling at a low price aud getting li'om Town as early ; as possible anything not in stock. In faot I have been to a lot of trouble and expense to keep tho business going, audi now intend holding a clearing sale and soiling out everything at cost price. It will not pay me to take the goods back to town, and the public iu Masterton and district have now a clianco they have never j had before of buying ironmongery at cost price. Before closing this letter I must thank all those who have given me their custom, and express my regret that' tho circle of my supporters was not sufficiently large to warrant mo keeping open aiiy longer.—l am, k.,
Jso. Yodng. Queen-street Masterton, and Cubastreet, Wellington.
