The New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Company's New Wool and Gram Store.

The New Zealand Loan 1 and M«v cautile Agenoy Company having decided to build iommoiHous wool and grain stores and offices on. the " . section at the corner of Featherston and Ballance Streets recently acquired from the Harbor Board) the. work has been entrusted to Messrs B«rry and McDowell, who*l' commence operations The building, which is to bo of brick, was designed, by Mr . Thomas Turnbull, and is certain to be a most valuable addition to.the architectural features of the city, in addition to whiohit will be built on the newest principles, with a careful. view to v ? protection against earthquake or fire.: \ Its. frontage to Mherstbn Street will be 157 ft by a depth of 72ft > fronting Ballance Street, and 84ft fronting; Whitmoro; Stieet. The ontranco is a wide one, opening into a large vestibulo paved with Minton tiles; and from tbo veitibulo folding doors, • handsomely glazed, opomng into a hall 19ft square, an the left of which are the Company's general office, together with, tlio manager's and inspector's private offices, a public waiting-room, eto. Tbo public offico will be 31ft '>y and the adjoining apartments will he well finished and commodious, On tho right are four suites of offices . which are to be let. A wido staircase leading from tho vostitule gives access to the tipper floor?. On the first floor thero will be an auction sale room 20tt by 18ft, to be used for wool sales, P' The remainder of these, and the whole.of the top floor, will be occupied for storage of merchandise, eto. At the north end of the warehouse there will be an inclined elevator, worked upon tbc most improved principles, the motive power. for which will be either gas or water; and at the south jjjf end there is to be a hydraulic lift. A wide cartway runs through the middle of the storo from Whitmore-street to Ballance-street, and a travelling crane overhead will bo used for loading or discharging nt whatever part of the storo may be necessary. Thus it will be seen that overy provision has been made with a view to facilitating, receiving, and discharging produce. In all other respects, also, every effort has keen made for the achievement of convenience and comfort, Tho building will be erected on concreted piles, and the whole surface of the floor will be covered with asphalte for protection against vermin and damp. Kauri, red pine, and totara will be used for the joists, floors, &c, The front of tho building will bear on it the Company's name, with tho figures y. 11 1889" and the words " wool and T' grain," The Company's now offices will, when completed, be a handsome acquisition to the city, and the fact of their being built on the l'horndon ' reclamation will probably direct attention to tho desirableness of that for business sites, situated as is-is -.proximinity to tho railway and wharves, Tho Company's determination te build such premises is a gratifying indication of the progress of trado and increased production,—N.
