Justice was called for. He waß unanimously condemned to death. But then arose a difficulty. The country possessed neither guillotine or executioner,'' The Prince tried to borrow, one from Paris, Paris sent an estimate of 16,000 francs for the loan of the woodwork and practitioner. The monarch of Monaco reflected that the operation would cost him dear; the assnssin was certainly not worth that price, Sixteen thousand francs for the head of a wretch like that I Never I But the Italian Government also sent in an estimate amounting to no less than 12,000 francs. It would be necossary to impose a new tax—a tax of Iwo francs a head, Tho Supreme Court deliberated long; at last they determined to commute the sentence of death to that of life-long imprisonment. But 1 they did not possess a prison. It was necessary lo fit one up, and a gaoler was appointed who took charge of the prisoner. For six months all went well. The captive was comfortable enough, The Prince, however, is r economical, and when they handed him the bill of expoases inourred in tho creation of this new function, tho cost, of the prison, the prisoner, and ! the watghraan, he made a wry face, and reflecting that this might go on forevor(tbe prisoner was young), he t requested tho Minister of Justice to , take measures to suppress the ex- , prose,. The gaoler was discharged. ', The prisoner, thus invited to guard ■ himself, could not fail to escape, which ' would eolve 1 tho question to ilie satisfaction of all parties. It became the duty of a palp.au scullion to carry Mui his moiils, But the captive made , no attempt to recover his liberty. Finally, one day, as they had neglected to furnish him with food, they beheld him tranquilly appear at , the palace to claim it; and from that lime he saved the cook the trouble of the walk to and fro. He never slept away a single night. The situation became a little puzzling , —not for. the convict, but for the ', judges, The Court reassembled, i and invited the Criminal to leave the State of Monaco, Ho refused. He , said: " I am your prisoner, judged . and condemned by you. lam faith- , fully fulfilling my sentenao; I remain , here." Tho Supreme Court was floored, The Prince was in a terrible rage, and deliberations were ! resumed, They then decided to offer the culprit a pension of six hundred francs if he would leave the state and live elsewhere, He. accepted. He has rented a little plot five minutes walk from the kingdom of his former sovereign, and lives happily upon his property, despising all potentates—as well he may. i " European Armies and Navies.
