The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, MAY 17, 1889. The Rabbit Question.

We nre pleased to notice that the remarks we made some time ago upon the serious growth of the rabbit nuisance in the Wairarapa is bearing fruit, Not only has the Inspector, Mr Druminond, taken the matter in band, but settlers themselves appear to seo the necessity for dealing with the evil. It is always a good sign to see even a small portion of the public display interest in a subject which so nearly concerns the whole district, for the result must be beneficial, Tbe Inspector has invited the settlers generally to begin poisoning on the Ist June, and at tbe same time gives a gentle reminder to the effect that tbe nuisance musk be suppressed, We believe we are right in saying that tbe majority of farmers and graziers in the Wairarapa have been seriously alarmed at the rate of progress mado by the rabbit during the last year or two, and poisoning will soon be as general as it was when the unpopular Rabbit Act was first passed, Let us hope that the result will be more satisfactory than it was ders to the wheel in a proper spirit at the time; they might have swept tbe nuisance out of the district, and saved themselves years of trouble and expense. In relation to the matter, a somewhat acrimonious correspondence has been carried on in the Wellington papers pn the subjeot whether wire netting is peful or not. It would scarcely be believed than any sane man would go into print and say that it is useless; yet it has been done, There, is really no room for doubt on the subject, The grazier who lays poison and prevents tbe rabbits from travelling by putting up proper fences must find tnat he is taking the safest and cheapost.in fact, the only means, for ridding himself of the nuisance.
