.'Nelson, May 11, At the Magistrates Court sixteen charges of breaches of the Beer Duty Act wereheard against WallisandPage brewer's at Matukeka. The charges were all of false entry. The charges against Page were withdrawn, as it was shown that he had ceased to be partner, a»d no defence was offered by Wallis in five charges. Oonviotions were entered and fines of £SO each case inflicted, making a total of 3254185,' The plant and Block were Eeized. The other charges were withdrawn,
Fatalities.' Blenheim, May 10. A sudden death ocourred at Tua Marina last night, Peter Morris, a highly educated remittance man, died of asthma. His brother, in India, is a Lieutenant-Colonel of the 601b Rifles. _ A man named Michael Dowling died to day while undergoing an operation for cancer at the Hospital. He had chloroform against the advice of Dr Cleghorn, who operated. Mr Nairn, administered the chloroform, and before the operation was over, the patient suddenly ceased to breathe. , Masonic* Auokund, Saturday. _ The Devonport Masonio Lodge decided unanimously in favor of the Grand Lodge proposal. . Waipawa, Saturday. This morning at a quarter to four tho old Waipawa hotel was burnt down. The origin .of tho fire i$ unknown. The builders were at work on the premises up to five o'clock yesterday, also the painters, repairing and adding. The building was insured in the North British and Mercantile builders risk £650. There was no one in the house at the time of the fire. One of the outbuildjj ings insured for L 75 was saved.

May 10; \ Ihe.Commissioner of Crown Lands has taken cognisance of a considerable amount of phoriraium tenax which has been/taken without authority from Crown lands. The rangers have received instructions to report any case !of the kind that scomes under tlioir notice,as it isa breach of covenant 1 to deal with any flax on lands- leased from Government without obtaining the necessary authority. Armed with these he prcoeeded against 20 persons, who were determined to fight the cases, altogether ignorant of the modus operandi of the ranger. When the Court opened Mr T. W. Stringer was retained for the defendants and M,r ActomAdams for the prosecution. 'lt was arranged that a test case should be taken, to prove which the ranger was called, and, under the cross-examination of Mr Stringer, revealed his modus operandi. The Bench concurred in Mr Stringer's contention that the novel mode of drawing the information vitiated tho whole proceedings, and the expenses iucurred on account of mileage, &0., amount to oyer LSO, which will be paid by the County Council,
ILLICIT DISTILLATION. Heavy Fines. Gbbymouth, Saturday. The Magistrate delivered judgment in the illicit distillation cases. He said he had no doubt Tayler had been, making whiskey on bis premises, and bad made tba whiskey seized, iiit the evidence on tint point was defective. However, he found him guilty on two charges, first of having more than the lawful quantity of spirits in tbe. brewery for which he was fined L 25 or three months' imprisonment, and on tha second, for having a quantity of spirits in his possession on which duty bnd not been paid, holding that tbe onus of proof rested on defendant to show how hecamo by the spirits and whether the duty was paid, Fined on this charge LIOO Or three months' imprisonment. Taylor was taken to gaol;
