Pugilists in Court. j Wanganui, May 3. The case against the pugilists Harry Laing and W, Smith was beard-to-day before tlireo Justices. After a repetition of the former evidence the case was dismissed, with the following deoision delivered by ilr Krull, J.P.:—" The Bench has decided to dismiss the case, The case the police have relied upon and quoted has no parallel with that which took place at Wanganui, The ono wbb disorderly altogether, and we should not like to have it go for. that anything disgraceful occurred here as in the case which took place in England. School Buildings, , Auclund, May 8, ' Among the number of protests , received to-day by the Board.of Education against the alleged irregni larities in several School Committee ■ elections was one stating that at Victoria Valley meeting' of house--1 holders a number of young men ' attended and endeavored to get a , majority on the Committee favorable ! to the use of the public school building for dancing and boxing. The Chairman of the Board (Mr Upton) said if this was true it was time the Board stepped in and made a definite rule respecting the use of school buildings. It was resolved to ask the Committee'ior an explanation Religious Instruction. Invercargiu, May 8. At the. Education Board Dr Hodgkinson, M.H.R,, moved that steps be taken to create a library in each school of the district, and that the Board's contribution to each be a copy of the Soripture of the English or Douay version, as may be required. The mover explained that be moved iu the matter to remove the stigma of godlessness from tho education system of the Colony. He argued that placing a Biblo in each school by the Board would be an acknowledgment that the ministers of religion could enter the building . and give religious instruction outside school hours. It was objected that the establishment of such libraries would be expensive, but the doctor replied' that the Bible itself was a library of forty books, and he-did not propose-that the Board should find ■ any other literature.. The debate ■ was adjourned.
1 Epidemics* [ ' '_' Chkisichdroh, May B.' , ; Soine little excitement prevails in tbe'East Christchurch school district ■ concerning cases of diptheria alleged to have been caused by the insanitary condition of tlie infant schools. The schools were closed for six weeks on account of the prevalence of "diptheria, but recently re-opened.' One or two children have contracted diptheria since, and one parent alleges it was caught at the school, 'ihe Committee' deny this; but it appears there is hardly a Bufficient water supply to flush the closets, etc. The expenditure of £OO iu a deep well and a hydraulic ram would remedy this.' In connection with the recent Omahu disturbance, for promoting which Airini Donnelly and others were committed for trial on a charge of forcible entry, .a, counter. charge was brought against; Brougliton and party for breaking, into a- tent and throwing it'off the'ground. The 6aid tent was erected'and dcoupied by Airinis followers. The ,R. M. Committed Broughton, his- brother and an employee for trial.'..
