Beard wrote slating he ; had been consulted by Mr W.Perry, in consequence of damages done to his premises, access being cut off by water flooding the footpaths. Mr Perry had no wish to stop the water, as long as it was confined to its. proper ohannel, but the nuisance I must be abated, and steps taken to prevent a -recurrence of, it,; or he, would have to take steps to compel the Counoil to do so, ' The Mayor moved that the Tom' Clerk write to Mr Beard, and request him to peruse the by-law bearing on the-; question, and he. would find; where the'remedy.lay. Cr Cullen seconded the motion". ' posed roads sent to him. No reply had yet been received. i Tho Mayor said Mr Powles would probably be in Masterton shortly. He ! had written to him privately, asking him to meet the Committee on the subject. He did not think anything, further could,ho done at the present. FINANCE, ) The Finance Committee's report was read, (as already published) and together with the estimates, adopted, HIE JUBILEE, Cr Dixon drew attention to the. fact that the Council had put on gas to keep the water in the boiler of the Steam, Fire Engine hot on condition • that the Fire Insurance Companies reduced their rates. He asked if they had dono so ? The Mayor said the water supply committeo could not invite the insurance people up until the Council put in two more hoso boxeß. It was in consequence of the opposition of Jhe Council that tho matter was jfcg ': up. When everything was doneine underwriters asked, they would pro» bably reduce tho tariff of rates. GAS COMMITTEE. The report was read and adopted. COMMITTEES, Cr Dixon was appointed a member of the Library, Gas, and Fire, ftinmittees'intheroomof ex-Counoillor Parsons. '. nEFECIIVE FENOES, Cr Hessey drew attention to the': defective fences on the Upper Plain Eoad. Sheep, when being driven along tho road, broke off, and there was, nothing to prevent them from straying on to thtf adjoining properties, which caused endless trouble to drovers. Some of the fences on the line of road had only a couple of' wireß at the top, and nothing under- ■ neath. : The Mayor suggested to the Town Clerk to write to the occupiers of the properties complained of; and ho was instructed accordingly. ' .^ RESIGNATION. jft Cr D. Carman tendered nation as Councillor, he Having; parted with his qualification to retain • his seat. He took the opportunity to thank the Councillors.
