FOOTBALL.
The first olub match of the season was played at Grey-top on Saturday between the local club and the Stars, and after an interesting game resulted in a win for the Groytown- men by three points to one, The game was played under the new rules, and Mr Kalanger acted as Eefereo. A high wind was blowing, which Greytown had the benefit of at the start. In the first spell, F. Polling got over the Star line and drew first blood, E, Udy converting the try into a goal. In the second- spell, Watson seoured a touch down foiihe Stars,, whioh &. Thompson failed to' convert. The game throughout was rather in favor of the local team. Ellers did some fine potting, but was unfortunate in only getting posters, three times the ball going within an ace of scoring, McCarthy, of Carterton, played fullback for the Stars, and made some good kicks. For the losers, Walter Weloh, Emmett, and Watson among the forwards, and B. Thompson in the backs, showed up well. Among the winners, Webster, Mitchell, and Polling played a slashing forward game, and in the.back division Ellers and E. Udy did great service.
The Masterton Club had a good muster on the ground on Saturday afternoon. Messrs Whatman and W. E. Welch selected Bides, and a good game was indulged in. Soveral new men showed good form.
