■ A London correspondent writes:— Many wild rumours aro going about with regard to Colonel North's princely generosity. What has not been stated and what moreover, is a fact—l hear, but on unquestionable authority—is that the JS'itrate King, having been exceptionally well served on various occasions by a waiter at one of our palatial hotels, before leaving this country handed him a cheque for no less than a thousand pounds. We understand that Mr Vile has about completed arrangements for the purchaso of one of Mr James Jones' four-horse spring waggon teams, which it is intonded shall bo employed in tho carrying trade between Pahiatua and Eketahuna Railway Station, Mr Vile has had a number of years experience in this kind of business, he being at one time in tho Wairarapa one of the lamest carriers there, and should therefore give general satisfaction to the public. The team will Icavo Eketahuna on Monday next on its first trip.-Pahiatua Star. The wheel-tire by-law in the Wairarapa North County comes into force on the first May prox. This will necessitate Mr T. Lett discontinuing his coach to Tinui and Castlepoint, For that comfortable conveyance he will have to substitute an open brake which will not protect the travelling public duiing tho inclement winter months, It is a pity the County Council cannst in the interest of travellers make an exception in favor of mail coaches generally, tho under gear of which will not admit of the whetls being altered (o broad tires.

We notice Iho management, have decided to make the prices of admission ' to the Theatre on Wednesday night, on ' the occasion of Maritana being produced, 3b, 2s, and Ib, As showing tho advantage the railway has conferred on the business people at Eketahuna, the Fahiatua Star mentions that in tho case of a tiuck loud of coal to the order of the local smith, the charge from Mangamahoe to,Eketahuna was only 3s 3d whilst if it had been brought by dray it would have cost fullv £5, The Mastorton Wesleyan Oburoh was orowded to. excess on Sunday, night to hear tho Rev W. Perry, The pulpit and surroundings were draped with mourning, and the rov. centtenian preached a most impressive sermon, taking tor his text a portion of the 21st verse, Ist chapter of Philippians.—" To dio is (fain." A great sensation has been produced at Paris by an Order of the Day addressed to the 90th Regiment by its commanding, officer, Colonel Senart. It is as follows: " It is with deep and sincere regret that the colonel announces to tho regiment the cruel loss juat sustained by SurgeonMajor ot tho First Class Eudes, m the person of his mother, who died tho day before yesterday at Strasburg. The grief of Dr Eudes is the mere poignant, as for five davs his dying mother craved for his presence at her bedside, and as, despite the supplication of a son who asked to be permitted to bid a last farewell to his mother, and despite tho formal authorisation of the Strasburg police,. and Doctor ■ Eudes undertaking on his word of honor to return immediately, the German Enbassey inhumanly refused tho leave which he implored.- The German Embassy .'went so far as to declare to Doctor Kuden 'that he would; be : arrested at the frontier' if he attempted : to pass it. Suoh is the conduct of the ■ Germans towards a French officer I Are such things worthy of a civilised country?" Tho colonel need Bay no more; but this order will bo read to each company assembled for tho purporo, and the comi mannors of companies will comment , thereon to their men, so that, the feelings with which every French soldier ought to bo animated towards the tier- ; mans may be thoroughly impressed on i their hearts,
I hear, writes a London correspondent, of a very painful case Hint occurred ft the East End of London. A young and accomplished lady, the daughter of wealty parents, on returning homo from a music lesson the other afternoon, found crouching at the door a small, ill-fed, miserable-looking dog. Out of charity she coaxed the brute into the house, and instructed tho servants to bring it food. To such a terrible state had the dog been reduced that the young lady's sensibilities were keenly touched, and she insisted upon feeding tho animal herself. The dog, however, persistently refused to eat, and, on its fair rescuer from misfortune attempting a little pressure, the brute turned savage, seized tho young lady by the cheek, inflicting a most unsightly wound; She was found in an unconscious condition on the floor, and on a man servant attempting to remove the the cause|of the mischief, he was attacked by tho dog and bitten nn the hand, The worst, howevor, haß to be told. Subsequently the dog manifested unmistakable signs of madness, and the greatest fear is entertained that both the young lady and the servant will fall victims to hydrophobia. The lady is an only child, Ono way by which ladies fair can always try to enter into married bliss is what in continental papers is generally
stated to bo " no longer an uncommon way." They employ tho matrimonial agent, and can have the choice between a multitude of candidates for marriage. Another moans of obtaining a similar object has quite lately been employed by a young German widow. She had 3 marks (Bs.) in a savings bank, but in order to attract suitors by her wealth, she put the figures 622 before the three in her bank-book, and then displayed tho latter on every possible occasion. A farmer who wanted money weiit into the trap, married the widow, and was only disenchanted when five days after the wedding his wife was arrested for fraud, The fact that alio had bought her trousseau on tho strength of her imaginary wealth caused her judges'to harden their hearts greatly against hoi, and she is now oeginning her term of fivo years' penal servitude. Messrs Lowes and lorns announce their next stock sale for May 8.
There was a vory large gathering .at the Mastorton Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday night, the service being conducted by the new Captain, Miss Needham;
Wo have received anothor communication from Greytown signed "Public Opinion,' 1 reforring to the operaMaritana recently given in that town as "quite a musical treat," It will servo no good purpose to publish the letter in full.

The nmmbors of tho Masonic Lodges of oil constitutions aro requested to meet ot the Mnsonio Hall, Bannister-street, on Wednesday evoning next, at 7 p,m,, for the purpose of tendering their fraternal greeting to tho Earl of Onslow, Past Grand Warden of England, Tho stables and cowshed on Mr Hales' station, Plat Point, wero burnt down on Thursday night, and scarcely anything was saved. Thero were two horses in the stablo at the lime, and only ono of them was resoued, Nothing is known iib to the origin of the fire, The premises were insured in the Victoria Office. Mr Hales was in Wellington at the time of the occurrence, i
Maßterton must have particular days on which in enjoys perfect immunity from risk of fire, if the Mayor's brooklet is any criterion. For Beveral days, last week it follpwed the way [which several of our public speakers might take with advantage-it dried up. tin Saturday, however, it burst out afresh and all day Sunday it ran over-the footpath in several placeß. By way of celebrating its re-appearance it brought down a young teal duck, which, .disported itself in the streets for some hours, much to the amusement of the public, A somewhat serious accident happened on Friday evening to one of Mr Evernden's timber waggoiiß. ABitwas being drivan into a paddock at Akura, the horsos swerved, and ono of tho hind wheelß caught a post, and the result was that the leaders ran away, throwing down one of the shaft horses, and dragging it and the fore carriage a distance of fifty or sixjy yards. The unfortunate animal was found to be fearfully out about the chest, the traco chain having cut right down to the breast bone. It was attended by Mr W. Stannard.who dressed the wounds. The driver escaped with o, severe shaking, while tho waggon itself was hut little damaged. Tho shop windows of Mr T, Jago proved" a source'of groat attraction to the pubho generally on Saturday night, more particularly so with the fair sex, The interest was centred in a lovely' drawing-room suite, upholstered in crimson and old gold plush, edged with cord and gimp to match. The frames are highly polished, and the workmanship and finish are equal to ' anything tuth.ed put in'theCplony., The attraction to the youngladiea lay in- the faot that the suite is to furnish (ho apartments of a Mastorton couple whoso wedding is arranged to take pjace one d&J this week, .the bride' being the daughter oftj, iypJj-Kpqwh ptore'kejpe? of this town. .'<".:' '■/■•'...' . Our worthy Mayor tolls of -rhiniaelf 'a jvery. oharaoterißtid iucidenti "WKon Governor Jervoiß- paid a visit to Maslerton, Jib ihad a" friendly ohafc with Mr Kenall at some length, add' at its conclusion invited him to luncheon with him, ''■ I've just had the only meal I take in the middle of the day," replied our old identity with .more truth than etiquette. His Excellency smiled and passed on, but did not give Mr Renall a chance to retriovehis mistake. ' A large number of Te Kooti's follower some mounted on horseback and others in conveyances of various kinds, passed through Maßterton en route for Papawai, (near Greytowri) and Marfcinboro'. They are to assist in tho work of erecting a large meeting-house at the latter placo. The well-known skill in oarving gives them the proferoncu over the local natives, The present structure at Papawai, on Wi Mahupuku's land, is to be removed to Martinborouyh and considerably' enlarged and beautified.
We are afraid that some of the Enßt Coast sheep farmers are experiencing a slice. : of Australian drought. We learn from thebostauthority that feed in the neighborhood-of. Tinui and Blairlogio has almost entiroly disappeared, owing to tho dry weather, and that, although laree numbers have been taken off. and sold, sheep are starving, considerable numbers being already dead. It seems singular that a patch of country should bo loft in suoh conditiun. There is a good supply of grasß from Alfredton right along under tho ranges to Featherston, At Kaiwhata and' Waikaraka, graziers have no cause to grumble, and news to a similar effect comes jrom higher up the coast. This leaves a patch of dry country, with green grass all around it.
Are you wet? is a very aggravating question to ask ; a 'man when he emeigea from a pool of waterinto which he has accidently. fallen on a cold night. If that man happens to be of a choleric disposition it is hotter not to be too inquisitive. On Saturday .evening as I'M. de Lesseps the second " was sitting in the drawing-room of his residence, Upper Plain, a sensation something like a sudden chill or gal-, vanio shock which culminated in a terrible turning in his right eor. "My dear,"he said to his Bpouse, "'Whatever is the matter ? 1 have a strange feeling that something- has gene wrong with my Suez canal, I mußfc go into Masterton at once and ascertain what is the matter." Hastily putting on his coat and hat, and taking with him his trusty walking stick, ho hurried into Queen-street, and when he arrived near Mr Caselberg's store, ho saw a crowd of people gathered on the footpath, He heard his own name mentioned in fonea of anger, and hiß dear water scheme was being apostrophised in burning terms. Ha found to his horror on enquiring what was the cause of the unusual commotion, that a gentleman, high in authority in one of our local institutions, had been suddenly brought low, and that the fault lay at his door, It appears that as the gentleman in question was returning from paying a visit to an office on the opposito side of the road to his own, his foot slipped, ant! bo fell full length into, the water'channel, whioh was extra full on that night. Being no light-weight ha received a severeshaking. Tho undipnified position in which he found himself, and tho query with whioh our paraprapd opened, added to tho smothered laughter of the bystanders, did not tend to lessen bis ire. After this, look out, These man-trans will have to be boarded over or the Council will be let in for heavy damages,
