A respectably dressed young woman named Amy Bock, abas Laing, alias L M. Brunnoll, was brought up at Christohuroh on Thursday morning, oharged with obtaining goods to the - value of U Is 2\i from O. Luxton on 20th Marob last by false pretences, and'also with obtaining tho Bum of XI from Jonathan Checkley on April 17th by means of false representations. The accused, for whom Mr I). Wynn-Williams appeared, pleaded - guilty. Inspeoter Pender said there was something extraordinary in the history of the girl, Sho had been convicted in Christohurck some tune " ago on a similar charge to the one on whioh she was now before tho court. She bad afterwards goue to Wellington and got in to the same kind of trouble, The Magistrates, however, i had some doubts as to her sanity, and instead of sending her to gaol comroSUhertothe Industrial School at Ojfcrsham. rihe oarried on in the there, and wasoxamined i doctors as to her sanity, but they could not-agree. She obtained a quantity,of goods in Dunedin, but gave most of them away i to friends. The accusod had recently , been living as governess at Airs , Brooks', at tho Hill Top, near , Akaroa, It was not known how she < bad disposed of the goods obtained ' from Mr Luxton, She came by ' train tho previous day from Little ' Eiver, and she was followed, in a cab by Detective O'Connor and Constable Walker, and after driving round several streets she went into the ; shop of Mr Checkley, and stated that Mrs Brooks, who was known to Mr Checkley, was at the railway station, and wanted 16s change, as she had not enough to take her home. Mr Checkley gave the accused £l, and she wont back to the railway station, but when about to have by train for Lyttelton she was arwsted. The accused was, Mr Pender believed, not accountable for her actions at times. Ho would recommend that she be rerJjjled and oxarained as to her BaiSjv Ho believed that she wished to be placed whore she would be prevented from.giving waj toher propensity ,for obtaining goods, After consideration, it was decided that the accused should be remanded for medical examination as tf her sanity, and it was understood that Air Donaldson should.be asked to keep her separate from other prisoners in the Addington gaol,
