Fire on Board the MariposaAuckland, Wednesday. _ The Mariposa left for San Frauoisoo on Monday and returned to port at'half past three this morning. The oause. of her return was an outbreak of fire among the flax stored in the forehold. Immediately the fire was discovered, measures were takon to extinguish it. Tho hatches were kept closed and steam turned into the hold. After six hours it was extinguished but it was thought inadvisable to proceed on the voyage until tho extent'of the damage had been ascertained. The greatest good order waß observed throughout' the occurrence..-

Gisborne, April 28, When the half-caste Makaore was arrested for: the Mahia murder, the boy Reihana made a confession that he accompanied Makaore to Gollan's house on Thursday evening, and remained at the gate 800 yards from, the house. Shortly after the boy heard a shot, • then someone cry out as if in pain. Not long after Makaore came out, and the two proceeded: back to the kianga. At the same time he observed the house on fire, The house was an ouUtation on Mr G.C, Ormond's, eight miles from Mahia towfiship and three miles from the station. The house was a cottage, and was one of two rooms, (jollan not being at work on Friday morning, Mr Urmond sent for him, when

Mr Large, J. P., the Acting-Coro-ner, held an inquest, which was adjourned: till Thursday next, so that Detective Grace .could get up evidence. The Maori woman, Mini; was at Gisborne in the morning, but haß been sent to Mahia, She stated that Gollan always bad been good to her, and she was grieved at his death. Makaore frequently endeavored to get her to leave Gollan but she detested the half caste, he being a bad man. Makaore has borlie a notorious character. Gollan generally liked the woman, who stated that she had told Gollan of Makaore's overtures, consequently great bitterness and jealousy existed between the two. Mihi is a big woman, aged 24, of very plain appearance. ' She is a pure Maori. Fatalities- I • Hokitika, April 23. A man, whose name is unknown, was drowned in the Otira river, The body is being conveyed to Kuraara. Another man, whose naine is also unknown, met with an accident while shooting at Kriwatawa. He shattered his thigh, and was lying in [ the bush all lust, night, It was i freezing hard the greater part of yesterday.
