TOWN LANDS TRUST.

Annual Meeting. The annual lueetinß of the voters of the Masterton Town Lands Trust was held in the Drill Shed on Monday' night last. Mr W. Lowes, Chairman of the Trust presided, Only about hnlf-a-dozenpersons were present, The Secretary read the advertisement convening the meeting, and the Chairman road tho report and balance sheet which had already heon published. In moving tho adoption of the report, the Chairman Btated that it was satisfactory to the Trustees to boabloto report that the amounts outstanding (or rents had been materially reduced, In 188? the arrears were L 245 17s fid, in 1888 to L 139 178 6d, and in the current year Ui 15s 6d., and of this amount there was nothing but what was good. Additional grants had been made to the Slate Schools of Masterton and Fcrnridge of LlO and 15 respectively, LlB 15s had been paid to assist in establishing the School of Design. A

sum of LSO was deposited with the Building Society, on which interest was accruing at the rate of six |ior cent per annum, and the Secretary had been instructed to increase the deposit account to Ll5O. Ho referred to the proposed new Bill, which would bo brought before the Honso early in the ssssion, Hb was anxious to nee the Bill become law, as by it the Trustees would be endowed with power to deal with audi matters as the picnic fund. Referring to»lhe difficulty the Mastorton School Conir mittee had got into over the payment of prizo money, the Act is very stringent on the matter, aud the Trustees had no option but to refuse payment It was evident tho School Committees generally did not want to taKB advantage of tho provisions of the Act for picnics, and the new Bill would enable the Trustees to grant money for other purposes of greater utility to the schools. Tho Public Bodies Leasehold Act, as embodied in tho new Bill, has been brought into operation by the Governor, thereby enabling the Trustees to secure higherrentsaud better buildings by offering compensation for improvements.

Mr Feist seconded the motion, which was carried without discussion. The Chairman read the chuse of the Act relating to the election of auditors, and Mr Galloway movpd, and Mr tyoodroffe seconded, that Messrs J. lorna and VV.
