The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1889. Dairying.
Them is probably not another industry that would pay the settlers in the Forty-Mile Bush better than that of dairying. Their lands were all bush before they took them up and made them habitable, and they will be more or less covered with stumps and logs which the fire has failed to dostroy, for another generation to come, lor to clear them of these remnants of the forest would involve an expenditure which but fow small farmers aro in a position to boar, Bpinn 'unable to grow cereals in any quantity because their land is not yet fit for tho plough and reaper and binder, they are compelled to rely principally on what their surface sown grasses can produce or support, namely, cattle and sheep, and such quantities of grass seed as they are v able to harvest by means of the scythe or sickle. Beside, this latter article ; tlwy have had very little, whioh they would turn into money except an occasional lot of fat cattle or eheep, and a few bales of ivool. « Now that tho railway has penetrated as far as Eketahuna, this is being gaadually changed. Articles that were not salable before may now be 1 produced and sent to Masterton or ' Wellington at a profit, and as section ' after section is being cleared and ' sotlled, the quantify will naturally I increase till they will bo compelled to , look for a market further afield, In other words, they will have to export, As buttorand cheese are certain to bo among the leading products of tho district we would earnestly impress upon tho settlers the ad- ■ visabloness of adopting tho factory ! system. Jtis truo that this requires a little capital; but if forty or fifty farmers were to combine and erect a butter or clieose factory, ov both combined they would find it to , cost far less than if each one , of tliem erected a small plant on his own premises; with this advantage that they conld produce a uniform article that would have a standard value in tho markets of the world, Factory-made cheese has already almost driven the ordinary article out of the market, and. whenever there is a large consumption, separator butter fetches twp pence and even thrse pence per paund'more than the ordinary dairy product, although, for souio unaccountable reason, there is a prejudice against the latter article in tho Wairarapa, That it is better has been proved beyond all doubt. Our readers will perhaps remember that a trial shipment made by Mr E. S, Maunsell, who owns the only factory in the district, realised the highest price ever obtained for colonial butter in the English' market. We would, therefore, strongly impress upon the settlers tjjp necessity of acting together in a ma,ttoi' jjf this kind. They cannot depend upon'tjie'colonial market being always open to jtJjßra, and they can certainly not .expect if) obtain .a high, or even a regular price for what we might term "home-uiOide" butter iu the' Sydney
or English markets. Summed up, the points in favor of combined action are: a better and more uniform article arid consequent better price, easier work in producing the butter, and, we may add, cheapness of production, Thero is only one disadvantage to be set against these, namely, the difficulty of getting the milk to the factory. This ia not, however, a serious consideration. There is but little chance of milk being taken to a factory in winter, and in summer the roads are, as a rule, dry and pleasant to travel on, while every farmer lias a vehicle of some sort in which die an carry his milk,

When a gifted lady friend of wiiio told me that she had 'cried her eyes' out over the conclusion ot "Le Beve" lwss tempted to read Zola's latest novol.
