Book Stealing. Cimisiiiiußcn, April 12, John Wheatlcy, a second-hand dealer, was fined bo in tho Christchurch Eesidont Magistrate's Court to-day for feloniously receiving a book knowing it to liave beon stolen from the public library, Tho book bore the libriry stamp and a copy of tho rules on the back, and was purchased by Wheatlcy with two others for a shilling. A Warm Reception.

iNYEKCAitoiM, April 12, Frew, tho man who tried to rape a girl at Orepuki, and was acquitted, got a warm reception from the popution on his return home, and was only saved from personal violence by the fact that he was accompanied by his wife and children, He got 24 hours to clear out, and lias done it. An Ingenious Scamp; Timarm, April 12. A man named Eugene MoLean, with several aliases, was sentenced to two sentences of three months each, cumulative, on two charges of obtaining board and lodging by false pretences by an ingenious and impudent method, Be pretended to be at work on the railway, by going out in tho morning and returning at night with his hands and face well blackened whereas he was proved to be loafing in the town.
