Report of the Trustees of the Masterton Hospital for the year ended 31st March, 1889.
In submitting their annual report and balance-sheet for tho year ended 81st March, 1889, the Trustees of the Mnsterton Hospital have pleasure in drawing attention to the faot that the voluntary contributions to the Institution, supplemented' by the Government subsidy, have been rather more than suflicient to moot the year's expenditure. This result is all the more gratifying, as some. doubt was entertained at tho beginmug of the financial year, as to whethor it would be practicable to make both ends meet without sorao assistance from the Local Bodios. In view of tho support which has been extended to the Institution in the past, the Trustees believe that the people of Wairampa North will continue to maintain the Mastertoa Hospital on its present footing. When framing their estimate of receipts and expenditure for the current year they have therefore again refrained from applying for any grant from the District Board. Ilio immediate result, of course, will be that the local rates will not bo burdened for the maintenance of the Masterton Hospital, and the Trustees look with confidence for suflicient support in the shape of voluntary contributions to justify their actipn. On reference to the accompanying balance sheet it will be seen that the : total receipts for the year amount to £550 lis 5d against an expenditure of L 489 Os 5d., The relative figures . for 1887-8 are '£4 sB 10s, and L48117s Bd, showing an increase in receipts of £9l lfis sd, and of eipeij-
diture L 7 3s 2il for llio past us compared with tlio present year. ■ Thirty three patients liavo been admittod into the Hospital during tlio year, of those thirty have been discharged cured or rolieved, and ono has ff\ committed to a lunatic AsylvHK; Only ono death has occurred and in that case the patient was in a moribund state whoir admitted. Fourteen cases of accident some of thorn of a very serious nature luvve been dealt with, and the Trustees have pleasuro in reporting that they have all been successfully treated by the medical officor. Dr Hoslting, who lias been attentiye and skilful in tlio performance of jb duties. In May lastTho Custodian and matron resigned. The present custodian, Mr John Williams, is active and efficiont in tlio discharge of his duties, and the Trustees appreciate the kindness and attention he displays towards the pationts under his caro. The Secretary, Mr W. Sollnr, conto discharge his duties in his efficient manner, ' Through the liberality of the Committeo of the Exhibition held on behalf of the Wesleyan Church, the funds of tlio Hospital were increased by L2l lGs, and the Committee desire to take this opportunity of exprdtejng their acknowledgment to the gjpemen forming that Committee. TChey have also to thank the ladies and gentlemen who liavo contributed books, newspapers, linen, mid other articles for the use of the Hospital, especially the proprietors of the New Zealand Times, Evening Post, Evening Press, Wairarapa Daily, and Wairarapa Star for their liberality in supplying the institution with a free copy of their valuable papers. The statutory annual meeting of contributors to tlifi institution was held on 10th January, when the two retiring Trustees, W, E. Paige and Mr J. G, Boddiugton wore reelected. At a subsequent meeting of the Trustees, Mr Boddington was re-elected Chairman.
