The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1889. Bush Produce.
" The Pahiatua district is," writes its local organ, " most suitable for potato growing, which has been borne out by the enormous yields that have been obtained from small areas; and such being the case we believe it will pay settlers handsomely to go in for their cultivation in a thorough manner. Up to the present year Pahiatua lias been importing potatoes largely from Woodville, Napier, and elsewhere; but we believe the time has now arrived when the district will not only grow sufficient for it's own requirements, but have large quantities for export. The Wairarapa is not a good potato country, and consequently an enormous importation takes place every year. Why should not the Forty Mile Bush, which cannot be beaten for its potato yields, be able to supply Masterton and other townships with all they require? It is worth the serious thought of settlers. There is plenty of land which with little labor, can now be put under the plough. Messrs Hall and Sons and Messrs Avery Bros, have set an example in this direction which might be followed with advantage by many more." There is no doubt but that the picture drawn by our Pahiatua contemporary is a fairly accurate one, and that the more humid climate and the deeper soil of the northern settlement ought to produce a large, even, luscious tuber. A really first-class potato would command a remunerative price either at Masterton or Wellington, and thePahiatuans have a fair opening for selling all that they can raise. A little interchange in either produce or merchandise will, no doubt, prove benefioial on all sides. It is almost time that Masterton took some of the bush trade which goes- to Napier and Palmerston.
