"Give Him the Physic."
Some forty years ago, in one of the most beautiful of the many beautiful valleys then to be found in South Wales (now, alas I disGgured by collieries, ironworks, and railways), there lived a clergyman, the Rev. Blank Blank; Vicar of Llan-some-thing-or-other, more famed for his ability as a fly-fisher and shot than for his eloquence in the pulpit. Having, before he was ordained, served his articles to a surgeon, his services were oftener called into requisition for tho bodily ailments of his parishioners than for the cure of their souls; and as they were thereby saved the fees of a regular surgeon, he was a great favourite among them. His almost invariable companion in his fishing and shooting excursions was a retired collier whom w s e will call Evan Evans (for wantoi a better name), Evan was the best hand at tying a fly in the whole district (his " coch-ybonddii ■' was perfection, and would kill in all weathers), he knew the Beat of every haro in the parish, and, if a rabbit was wanted, he could point out tho spot where, at any moment, one wasto be obtained,
Havingonobe occasion contracted a severe cold, Evan was confined for some time to his house, and ( in consequence, did not put in his customary appearanco at. the yicarage, The vicar, having remarked his absence, took the first opportunity of calling on him, to know why he had not turned up for so long a time, and the cause being ascertained, ho told Evan's wife to send up to the vicarage and he would give her some medicine which would, as he expressed it, put Evan to rights in a few days, Nine or ten days elapsing and Evan still remaining invisible, the parson again called at his house, Meeting Mrs Evans, he asked, "How is Evan)" " Well inteel to gootness," she replied, "he is very bad." " Did you give him the physic 1" bo asked, •'/No,inteet," Bhe said; "Ithought if it was the Lord's will, be would get better without it; but I wish you would go upstairs and talk to him about his soul," " His soul," said the parson in a rasp; "give him the physic,"
