Masterton School Committee.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Thursday, March 21st.. PresentMessrs E. Feist (chairman), It. M. Galloway, 0. E. Daniells, E. Mc< Ewen, W. Pragnall, A. W, Hogg, A, \V. Renall.

The minutes of the last general and two special meetings wore reacl and confirmed,

The Treasurer reported a cred balance of £1 9s 6d.

The Headmaster reported, at the Main School there were 601 children, with an average attendance of 504, being 84 per centage. He'also drew attention to the pumps aud the certain requirements in respect to the closets,

Miss Keelingreportedonthe Infant Sohool: 11G on the roll, 109 highest attendance, 93 lowest, 100 average. Mr Hogg reported that he visited the school and could confirm the report of the Headmaster that the closets required attention. There should be a, continuous supply of dry earth or lime for use as a disinfectant. He had called on the Secretary and given him an order to send up a bag or two of lime, and that had been done. He hoped that would abate the nuisance. He suggested that dry earth should also be used.

Mr Daniells said the alteration of the olosots to the present system had been adopted principally on the recommendation of the Inspector of Nuisance, He had himself stated at the time that it would be, a failure unless dry earth was used. In regard to lime, the better they could get it the oheaper would it be in the end, but quicklime was not so good as dry earth..

Mr Hogg said lime was a ohemical agent and a disinfectant, wliereas, dry earth was simply an absorbent. Mr Darnells said the nuisance would be worse for a time when lime was used,

The Chairman said he was sorry to find on visiting the. school that the new arrangements for closets had not proved a success. He hoped the lime' would rnakp a considerable difference, as the ventilator was not sufficient to carry off the effluvia. : The Secretary was instructed to oall for tenders for five loads of firewood,

The .Chairman reported, as one of the deputation 'appointed, he had waited upon the Trus tees of the Town Lands Trust in reference to a grant for payment of school prizes. 'Their application bad not- met with a favorable reception, and the question had been left over, by the Trustees to their next meeting.

The Chairman said there had been no reply from-the Education Board yet in reference to the appointment of a teaober. He had spoken to Inspector Lee when he visited the school on Wednesday, but he knew nothing, about the matter. - • Mr McEwen was appointed visiting member for the'ensuing mpnth, and the meeting adjourned.
