Masterton Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Counoil was held on Tuesday, Perry, Oullen, Oarmah, Gapper, Chamberlain, and Heßsey, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, Apologies too read and acceptod from Crs G. Horon and R, J. Fitton. An application was mide by Mr G. S. W. Dalrymple on behalf of Mossrs ICeeater and Harding, for ' permission to transfer their lease of . the Borough Counoil reserve to the . Greytown Building Society. Be* . ferred to a cmpiitteo consisting of the Mayor, and Cr Gapper aud tbo Town Clerk, Mr S. Carroll, of Wellington, wrote asking the Council to forward the names of persons most suitable for forming a committoo for the whole district to provide a collection for the Dunedin Ephibition.
. The Clerk was instructed to reply Ahatthe Council would furnish tbo sßmea as soon as they possibly could considering the .matter. The Town Clerk was also instructed to communicato with the Chairman of the North and South Wairarapa Pastoral Associations on the subject. The Treasurer reported receipt of fines from the B.M. Court, £llGs. The pound-keeper reported fees collected for the month £1 lis. Mr E. S. Hawkins wrote isking the Council to allow him to resign as their represontativ on the United District Board. The Mayor said he was afraid if they lost Mr Hawkins they would not get anyone half as able. He thought the Council might ask him to continuo his position for the present. He reported that Cr Perry and himself had met the other delegates from local contributing bodies, and the feeling was that they should owe the payment for the support oftne Wellington poor to the utmost extent. The clerk was instructed to write
to Mr Hawkins and thank him for
to their interests on the fed and ask him to continue to o for the present, and point out t had been done by delegates of the local contributing bodies. The Mayor said the idea had got abroad that the burden of supporting the poor of tho colony would be thrown upon theconsolidated revenue and that would be a bad thing to do. They should raise the poor rates and expend them in their own districts. The Gas Committee's report was read. An application was made on behalf of certain ratepayers and residents in Worksop Eoad and the neighborhood, that a gas lamp be erected on the corner of Miriam-street and Worksop road. It wasresoM that the application be held over to next meeting of the Council, and the report be adopted. t wages account, amounting to 6d was passed for payment. General accounts, repairs to reading room doors, 7s 9d, aud Toimsend and Cowper, dog collars, £5 Is (id. The Inspector reported the water
lying in Bannister-street, near the Gasworks, was a nuisance. That the water at Bannister street dam was unfit to use for watering the streets, and that the Council should discon't%a its use. That the dam at BSnuister-street should bo removed, as it blocked the water and caused a nuisance. That actions had been brought against certain parties in connection with the creek. <
The Mayor said in reference to the water .lying on Bannister-street it arose from the water bursting the pipe leading to the gas tank, but could easily be stopped. In regard to tho water in Bannister street dam, Cr Hessey said the wator must be very bad it was not fit for stredtfhtering purposes. Creapper said it could not be so very bad, as thousauds of tons of fresh water went down the creek at - Churoli-street. That ought to flush it well.
The report was referred to the Sanitary Committee. The Fire Brigade Committee wore authorised to call for applications for the office of Custodian to the Fire Brigade. Crs Gappor and Cullen wore authorised to see to the repairs of the chairs in the Library reading room, Cr Chamberlain moved' that Shortstreet be completed. He said he had no hesitation in stating that it was the worst pieco of unformed road in jkiborougli, and the work had been fffiAised to be done for years. ■ Cr Hessey seconded the motion and stated the cost would be about £4O. Ci\ Jpen moved as an amendmentjUfflt the Works Committee be instructed to lay off the work and obtain an estimate, to submit to the next Council meeting. After further discussion the Works
Committee were authorised to call for tenders for completion of the road iormation in Short-street. The Mayor asked if the Council would be prepared to asphalt the footpath at the Post Office corner, provided the Government would pay for it. The Town Clerk was instructed to interview Mr Bagge, tho Postmaster, in reference to the matter and report. This concluded the business. " KOUOH OS l/OKNS.
