CARTERTON-TUESDAY/' (Before Messrs W. Booth and R. Fairbrother, J.P.'s). James Alsford wasoharged that he did on the 18th inst, unlawfully enter the dwelling house of Mr Edward Eagle at Cartorton, Edward Eagle deposed that at about 2.30 on Monday, the 18th inst,, he saw the accused coming out of a bedroom in . his dwelling house, Witness locked 1 the front door and dosed the back door when he went out, and when he returned twenty minutes after the back ; - ; door was open, He went in to see who• was there, and when he got Into the - kitohen ho he heard (he drawers in his daughter's bedroom being opened and shut. 'He took off, his slippers and went in barefooted, and when he got to the door he saw the accused coming ont of the room, andasked him what he was doing there. Accused said-he was very ■ Borry the servant girl (whom He met on the street) told him to call aa there was some work for him to do.' Witness told him to clear out, that he did not keep ay* servant girl, Had not seen him oiiifcd premises previously. There thathe could see disturbed in'tho room. ' Had not missed anything up.to the present, Jesse Bowles deposed that j* was a baker boy in the employ offcr'A L Whyte, Was driving the cart yesterday and saw the . accused walking about Mr Eaglo'a house with some umbrellas under his arm. It was about quarter past two in the afternoon, To the acaused:, 1 was about four chains off when I saw you as Lwas , driving up the. road. I saw you at iny:' - aunt's, Mrs Teel'e, about 12,15- p,m„ and I saw you ou Saturday night last in ' Carterton. I know you by sight as I have seen you before on several occasions.
t Constable Darby deposed he received " information that Mr Eagle's house bad been brokouinto by a man who was going about town monding umbrellas. Went to the Marquis of Normanby Hotel in tho evening, and arrested two men who were going about together, and on the way to the police elation Mr Eaclo recognised the accused as being the man aeon in his house. Chawed the accused with-being unlawfully in. Mr Eagle's house which he denied,' Accused stated that he came from Wellington with a man whose naitjgb John Cummins, and thoy worked tH way up through the different towiiships.
