EKETAHUNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent).' On Monday 11th, before Mr Anderson, J. P., Farrell alias Dublin, for being drunk and disorderly was fined 10s, In connection with the above Dublin seemed to be hard up. As he could not pay the fine he would have had to go to gaol but for a friend who paid the fine for him, The two then started on the tramp for Alfred ton, On the road, Dublin, being much the bigger man of the two, and knowing tliat the other man had money, thought he could frighten some of it out of him. Tho other one could not see it, Dubliu threatened to knock it out of him, but he happened to make a slight mistake, The little one said it was nibbing it in rather hard, after paying his fine, to be robbed on the road by the man ho had befriended, so, to ease his feelings, hegaveDublinagood thrashing. Another improvement here, acattle saleyard going up, The new hall on the Alfredton Road is-nearly completed, quite far enough advanced to hold a ball in on Monday, the 18th: I had a look at the building to-day, and was quite pleased with it, The size of itis 60x80ft inside, height of stud 18ft, It is floored with 1J in matai. The gallery 20x80 will seat about 40. The stage (it -will be a movable one) lift deep 21ft aoross, leaving, room for side wings for scenery fa. Immediately over the stage there is a small gallery to accomodate the band on baR nights, a decided improvement, as it will leave the whole floor clean for the dances. There are two dressing rooms behind the stage, with two doors, one on each side of the hall that lead directly to a passage way clear of the hall in case of a panic. The front entrance has double doors, on the right hand a room for refreshments, on the left another room that will be for' the use of skaters. The hall will be matched • lined throughout, with arched roof. There is one mistake the builders have made, (and it is sometimes a serious one in case of .a panic) all the doors open inwards, There have been so many accidents from the above cause that I trust tho builders will, before it is too late, alter it, Prevention is better than cure. On the whole the building seems to be well and substantially built, and I trust the promoters will succeed and have no cause to regret their undertaking. The builders state it will seat 300 persons. There is some talk of Mr Parsons, our new boniface altering his hall, by taking away the billiard table, cutting down tho partition that divides the hall and billiard room, as the hall at present is too small. I! do not know if he is going to build a - new billiard room or place the tablo in the large room atono end of the hotel.
We have, no reply yet re Magistrate's Court petition, A public meeting is about to be held here to persuade the Government to carry us right through to Wellington instead of stopping at Masterton, Look out, we are getting jealous of you. We have had some queer weather this last week; bitter cold winds with frost one night. I noticed a good' deal of snow on the ranges. Winter seems coming rather early.
