Masterton to Waimata lload, Contract ■ - • No. 34 (formation and metillingj.-l'nirlv good progress is being made with this work, and the first heavy imhnkinent is rapidly drawing towards completion. The brickwork specified in connection with the , tunnels has also been performed, and tho necessary .flood-gates.will bci suspended by tho end ol the pres-nt week. Tho remain. . ing work required to complete tho contract .' Bhould bo suflioienty advanced to admit of traffic travelling by the neu route by the end of April. A short length of the smaller tunnel on this contract which is driven - through a soitor description, oi took than that through which the main body of tho drivo passes, has developed symptom of flaking, and in order to guard against future trouble, from this source I would recommend that this length of 25ft bo. laid with biiek ' and that tho floors of both tuunels bcintcrverted with single brick, inverts spaced at 10ft centra throughout this length to provide against the scouring action of the strojjfr; also, that the sido batters in the opefßuttings be bricked with 4} inoh work as a further precaution against wear in this direction. _ Contract No. 35 (formation mid metalling.)— The torm for maintenance of this work will expire on tho 15th inst, Tho contractor is nt present engaged in trimming up and finishing off tho work preparatory to the linal inspection and transfer tifjfre Council. materials for substituting close bos oul-ve.-ts for two of the old log ones on the . 'l'auera road will bo delivered on the line this day, and their construction proceeded with at once. To Oro Ore to Bideford Iload, contract No. 17 (metalling).—Metal carting ;on this oontract was completed on or about tho 23rd oi last month, sinoo which date tho contractor has been engaged in trimmins up his work, repairing damage dene to formerly metalled sections, stone breaking, and generally completing the minor details of liia contract. Upon completion ol these his term of maintenance will commence, , and will hst into tho early part of next month, Contract No. 18, (metalling), was completed in so far 03 the racial carting is concerned, about the 2iith February. The metal repairs required by oontrnct arc still • unperformed t as well as other minor details of the work, These, however, will receive the early attention of tho contractor, who bos notified ms of his intention to resume worJjSjinediately. Ciwepoint Hiding, Masterton to Woi- , mataKoad, contract No 30 (metalling.)Owing .to the limited surface of suitable stone now available lor use in tho quarry, progress with this contract is considerably , retarded, and 1 feor that it is improbable - the work can bo completed, at earliest, before tho end of the month. A permanent man is now employed on tho Tinui-Castlcpoint section of tliis lino, replacing the worn-out culverts, ic, mentioned hi my report of last monih. Eketahuna to Tinui road-Tiraumca to Tjojj* Bcciion. Considerable metalling repflß have been performed on this lino, between the Tinui township and the commencement of tho metalling at the school, and this portion of the lino, hitherto in a somewhat dilapidated condition, has been placed in a fairly good stato of repair. The dam in tho Whareama river has also .. been finished, although at a cost considerably in escess of the amount voted by tho Castlepoint Board for the purpose Kven with this augmented expenditure I have been nnablo to complete it as 1 would have desired; but having brought it to a certain stage of efficiency I did not kA justified in incurring further outlay without tho sanctiqA{ the Council. lam of opinion, howevaJWiat without further expenditure it is question ,ble whether tho hanks may be ablo to sustain tho weight of a heavy flood whilo the channel through which it is proposed to direct the water is 50 contracted as is the caso at present. Alfredton Hiding.—Eketahuna, to Tinui road (Eketahuna toTiraumca section).Contract No, 18 (metalling).—This contract was completed in a satisfactory manner on the 3rd of this month. Tho work in al respects has been well and faithfully performed. :■' Contract No. 18 , (Formatiun repairs),-The oxtension of this contract is still in course of performance, hut may be expected to be completed ijf'an early date, CoolractNo. 20 (road formation ic).-This work, an extension, of iJho road towards Tiraumei, has been commenced, and, so far as I have been able to learn, is making fanf progress fci accordance with the Ooaaoil's instruc'ions, I liavo prospected MnSyverscnli section for metal, but have loilied to itscover stone or gravel in auiliMntquantity to justify tho Council appjfltf for a resorve in the locality, A ' ehaITST seam of fair gravel is to bo found ot cr a considerable area of tho ground, but it conld not be profitably worked for rood making ptoses. Opaki pßanawatu road.—Tenders havo been invited and dealt with for metal carting on this line, and the work of surface repairs is now being carried on with all possible despatch Contract No. 25 (suney of road side widths, Eketahuna).—This workis still in tho hands of the surveyor, hf.ving been returned to him for further details required by tho burvey Department. The construe- > tion of the Pound at Eketahuna is now proceeding, butl am unable to report on its progress, not having visited the ground sinco the work commenced. I have, etc., C. E. Bi;bmser. The Engineer was authorised to Lave the tunnel on contract No. 34, lined, &c, as suggested in bis report. It was resolved that the Castlepoint Board be asked to contribute a further sum of £lO towards com. pletmg the Whareama rivor dam. ■ The Engineer's report was then adopted. ESTIMATE. The Engineer was instructed to furnish estimates for tho ensuing year s requirements for the mooting after next. This concluded the business, m ~ indications of an improvement in the demand for real estate ato not wanting.
