Tbo ordinary quarterly meeting of - ' tho above Council was lield on Saturday, -Present—Ors a, R, Bunny (chairman), J. Martin, A. Matthews, H. Braithwaite, Win. Cundy, R. Wakelin,'W. Booth, and W. tan. The minutes of- the last meet-'V ing were* read-and confiiraed; the Treasurer reported a debit balance of"\ £7 5s 10s; the Chairman reported - that the other local bodies had agreed to the rise of rent lor the officss. ■ A petition from North Auckland Hospi- ; tal, advising co-operation, re the alteration of tho Act in referenco to ; : the same, and also to the relief of natives, considering that tliey 'nre not ■ liable tocontribiito to Ihe support.of the institutions; from W. W, Beard re the powers of tho County in - making by-laws to : regulate the weights carried over the roads and bridges within the County; from Wairarapa North re tbo legalising of ' voads, tho Ohairmm was authorised • to sign the petition on beliaif of • the County j from Mr Freeth re payrocifc, for attending meetings of Liceiisi* Committees, aalcins! that the Council guarantee a certain '.sum peivannum lor attending tho same. Moved fir < Cr Booth, seconded by Or Braithwaite, that the matter be deferred till the next meeting of the Council; and in the meantime the. Clerk ascertain' what amount ,bas hitherto been paid';' ' from Charitable Aid Board, asking " what estimate tlio County war,t Charitable Aid for the ensuing yeiiVitt Kesolved that .the'sum of £IOO ho' the estimate, The Chairman was ■ appointed delegates to represent this County at themeetuig of. delegates-in ■ respect sto the action taken' by United Charitablo Aid Board anil the unanimous opinion of, the' Councillors is that the ftiatier should be strenuously resisted. The. Chairman moved, Mr Matthews seconded, That application be made to the Treasury for tlio subsidy of. Or Wakeliu thought, that live tons was , too low a maximum, and that it was not fair to mill proprietors as they i had a lot to contend against. The Chairman and other Councillors spoke < on the matter. Or Braithwaite ■ sug- '' gessed that the words " except with the consent of the Council. or Road Boards," be added to the by-law, ;'flf Booth said that although he sidered that five tons wasquite Bnfficiont on any four-wheeled vehicle the by-law did not go far. enough. According to his experience narrow wheel tiros did far more damage to. the roads limn excessive weight, Or Brnithwaite's addition to tho by-law was accedodto, Resolved that 2500 feot ol timber be taken for fivo tonß. It was resolved That no person shall cause mora than iivo tons weinlit of. goods or 2500 feet of sawn timber, superficial measurement, to lie drawn over any bridge within the Wairarapa South County under a penalty of 15, ' such by-law to'como into force on the' first dry of May, 1889. Cr Wakelin suggested that the wheel tires should be added to the by-law, but the Chairman said that was; too elaborate n : question, and if ho (Cr Wakelin) wished to go . iuto , that "subject he would havo to givo notice of motion to that, effect. The by-law was then read and pasced, and the meeting adjourned. : \
